(Note – I would like to acknowledge that a great portion of the content of this message series comes from a series by the same name as taught by Pastor Bob Yandian of Grace Church and Bob Yandian Ministries in Tulsa, OK.)
Genesis 1:1-3 NKJV In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (2) The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (3) Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Three words used in the Hebrew when describing creation or this restoration:
Bara – to create something out of nothing
Asah – to create something out of material that exists (restore)
Yatzar (Genesis 2:7) – to mold, form or fashion something, derived from the idea of cutting or framing (examples of molding out of clay, forging of metal
Isaiah 45:18 NKJV For thus says the LORD, Who created (bara) the heavens, Who is God, Who formed (yatzar) the earth and made (asah) it, Who has established (stabilized) it, Who did not create (bara) it in vain, Who formed (yatzar) it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.
We live on a recreated earth.
Genesis 1:1 – Original Creation
Genesis 1:2 – The earth wrapped up in the curse and judgment.
Genesis 1:3 – Begins six days of restoration.
Day 1 – Genesis 1:3-5 – Restoration of day and night, light
Day 2 – Genesis 1:6-8 – Restoration of the firmament of the waters above us and around us
Day 3 – Genesis 1:9-13 – Restoration of land and vegetation
Day 4 – Genesis 1:14-19 – Creation of the Sun and the Moon
Day 5 – Genesis 1:20-23 – Fish and the fowl
Day 6 – Genesis 1:24-31 – Animals and man are placed on the earth.
Day 7 – God Rested
Our purpose for existing as believers is so that can reveal the manifold wisdom of God to the powers of darkness.
Day 7 – The Sabbath Rest – God Rested
Genesis 2:1-3 NKJV Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. (2) And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. (3) Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
God did not rest because He was tired. He rested because He was through with the work.
Jesus did not sit down on His through after the ascension because He was tired. He was seated because His work was through.
Hebrews 1:1-3 NKJV God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (3) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
God rests when His work is through not because the working makes Him tired.
Genesis 2:1 NKJV Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
Host – mass of persons organized for a campaign or war.
Ants and others are in groups, armies.
God puts things in groups.
Through grouping together, we can overcome the plans of the enemy. Satan’s mode of operation is to divide and conquer, create anarchy.
An army wins when there is order, structure, and organization.
Genesis 2:2 NKJV And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
Genesis 1:22 NKJV And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28 NKJV Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 2:3 NKJV Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Blessing produces multiplication which comes by Grace.
Genesis 2:3 NKJV Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
The Sabbath is a celebration of God’s grace! Not struggling to cause things to happen by our own might and power but God does it because of His grace.
Sabbath means “a rest”.
The Sabbath is Mentioned Again:
Exodus 16:23 NKJV Then he said to them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ”
2000 years later God brings it up again and it becomes law.
Exodus 20:10-11 NKJV but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. (11) For in six days the LORD made (restored) the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
By the time Jesus showed up, the religious leaders had micromanaged it to the point that everything was spelled out to the minute degree.
Jesus broke men’s traditions but He never broke the law!
Mark 2:23-28 NKJV Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. (24) And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” (25) But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: (26) how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?” (27) And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. (28) Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Exodus 20:8 NKJV “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Remembering is what makes the Sabbath holy. Remembering what? The Goodness of God!
Just like Communion, what is more important, the elements or remembering what Jesus did for us?
The Sabbath is designed to cause us to remember that what happened the previous six days happened because of the goodness of God.
The Sabbath was not about not working, it was about the remembering.
- The Sabbath was designated by God to teach people about His grace.
The truth is we entered into our Sabbath when we were Born Again and the work was completed by Jesus.
Hebrews 4:3 NKJV For we who have believed do enter that rest (sabatismos), as He has said: “SO I SWORE IN MY WRATH, ‘THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
- When God set up the Sabbath in Exodus 20, it was a reminder of the grace of God.
- The Jewish Sabbath was designed to cause the Children of Israel to remember the Lord’s provision.
-
-
- Exodus 20:8-11
- Isaiah 58:1-14
- Deuteronomy 5:12-15
- Leviticus 23:3
-
- Our daily walk of faith is our Sabbath.
Faith is the only thing you can do, and you don’t have to do anything.
Believing is the absence of our works.
- There is an eternal rest.
Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
This is a rest that begins at the New Birth and continues right on through the rapture and throughout eternity.
- In the Old Testament there was a Sabbatical Year every seven years.
The was a Sabbatical year where the Children of Israel were not to plant crops.
God would give them a bumper crop in the sixth year so they could allow the land to rest.
-
-
- Exodus 23:10-11
- Leviticus 25:3-4
- Leviticus 26:33-36
-
- The Year of Jubilee
Leviticus 25:8-17
A Generation test where once every 49 years, there was a year of total reset or cleansing. All debts were forgiven, property went back to the proper owner, etc.
A year to remember that God is the author and source of everything.
- To reject the Sabbath was an example of rejecting the Word of God and the Grace of God.
-
-
- Exodus 23:37-39
- Nehemiah 13:15-21
-
- The Sabbath has been interrupted.
Colossians 2:16-17
We are no longer bound to observe a specific day but to remember the original purpose.
