  • Armed and Dangerous – Part 4

A large portion of the content of this lesson came from Dressed To Kill by Pastor Rick Renner.
    1. “Agoridzo” – tells us that Jesus Christ came to earth to locate us in our depravity and to personally inspect our slavery to Satan.
    2. “Exagoridzo” – declares that Jesus not only came to inspect our condition but to permanently remove us from Satan’s power.
    3. “Lutroo” – tells us that Jesus was so dedicated to delivering us from Satan’s dominion that He was willing to pay the ransom price of His own blood in order to break the devil’s ownership over us.
    4. “Apolutrosis” – tells us that, in addition to permanently setting us from Satan’s hold, Jesus also restored us to the position of “sons of God”. Now we are fully restored and made joint-heirs with Jesus Christ Himself!

Through the Blood of Jesus, we have been utterly and completely set free from Satan’s control!

Therefore, Satan has no legal right to control us, our bodies, our families, our businesses, or our money. Although we once genuinely and legally belonged to him, we are no longer his to manipulate or dominate.

Why then, does the battle still rage on?

Freedom becomes a way of life only as we replace our wrong thinking and wrong believing with what the Word of God declares about our new condition.

The problem is that people were so abused in Satan’s slave market, they do not realize that they are no longer bound to him and his scars on their lives.

Renewing of the mind is really about removing these “residual areas” from the past so that those strongholds will not continue to exert power in believer’s lives.

The enemy probes our lives to find the “residual areas” that we don’t know to deal with or refuse to deal with so that we can be free.

Here are doors that he looks for to gain access to our lives:

    • Wrong thinking
    • Wrong believing
    • Memories of terrible experiences that happened before we knew the Lord that we still allow to dominate our emotions
    • Fears that were transferred to us from our parents, family members or friends
    • Years of incorrect doctrine taught to us in our former churches that we must now “unlearn” and overcome

In all of these areas, your soul (your mind, will, emotions) is the strategic center where spiritual warfare takes place.

Before we are Born Again, the condition of our minds is hostile towards God and is bent on destruction.

Romans 8:7 NIV The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.

Colossians 1:21 NIV Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.

Ephesians 4:17-18 NLT With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. (18) Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against Him.

Very often it is through the unrenewed mind that the enemy is able to exert his foul influence over us.

That is why we are told over and over to give serious attention to the condition of our minds:

Romans 12:2 NLT Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Ephesians 4:22-24 NKJV that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, (23) and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, (24) and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Colossians 3:10 NIV and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

    1 Peter 1:13-14 NKJV Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (14) as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;

In these scriptures, Peter paints the picture of a runner whose garments have fallen down and gotten angles up around his ankles. He was running a good race but got tripped up because of wrong thinking.

The consistent renewal of our minds with the Word of God will eradicate wrong thinking, wrong believing, scars from the past, and hurtful emotional memories that would exert influence on our new life in Christ.

In addition to taking authority over demonic powers, real spiritual warfare also entails taking authority over your mind.

    This is a lifelong commitment!

The following are essential elements of genuine spiritual warfare:

    • Renewing your mind
    • Meditating on the Word of God until it gets in your heart and soul
    • Learning to live a holy life
    • Seeking to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ on a day-to-day basis
    • Learning how to walk after the Holy Spirit

As you grow and your understanding of God’s Word begins to increase, you will probably have many opportunities to use your faith and to resist the devil.

Don’t be surprised by pre-emptive strikes.

Don’t be surprised when the attack comes and Satan whispers to your mind no one else has gone through the difficulties you are going through right now.

This is a trick to make you fix your eyes on yourself.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT (13) The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

A fight nearly always follows illumination.

Mark 4:14-15 NKJV The sower sows the word. (15) And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.

Your knowledge of how and when Satan attacks will equip you to deal with these assaults more intelligently.

James 1:2 NKJV My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

Notice this verse says “when” and implies that these attacks will come. The Greek tense suggests:

    • These attacks normally come when you least expect them.
    • They usually come from a direction you would have never dreamed of in a million years.
    • They are specifically designed to catch you off guard and to take you by surprise.

Remember, we said that it is possible to have a strategy for dealing with these attacks.

2 Corinthians 10:4 NKJV (4) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,

If you are mentally prepared and alert to how the enemy operates and to the potential of attack, you have already eliminated half of the battle.

Having a strategy and being mentally prepared eliminates the element of surprise. This will always give you the upper hand against the enemy.

As long as we do nothing for God, we can be confident that we will face no challenge from the enemy.

However, when we do begin to do what God has called us to do and start experiencing a measure of success in it, we must stay mentally alert and aware.

Luke 4:13 NKJV Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

But we can know, when the attack comes, we can overcome in every situation and God has a way to make the plans and attacks of the enemy backfire on him.

Romans 8:35-39 NKJV Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (36) As it is written: “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE KILLED ALL DAY LONG; WE ARE ACCOUNTED AS SHEEP FOR THE SLAUGHTER.” (37) Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (38) For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, (39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“More than a conqueror…” comes from the compound Greek word: “hupernikos”.

“Huper” is where we get our word “super”. This word means over, above, beyond, way beyond measure. It conveys the idea of superiority, higher, better, more than a match for. It means to be first-rate, top-notch, un-surpassed, un-equaled, and un-rivaled by any person or thing.

Putting these two words together means that we are: greater conquerors, superior conquerors, more than any match for any foe. We are utmost conquerors, paramount conquerors, first-rate conquerors, top-notch conquerors, un-surpasses conquerors, un-equaled and un-rivaled conquerors.

    In other words, we win!

There are many cases in the Scriptures where the attacks of the enemy backfired on him.

Example of Paul in prison in Rome and pens the Epistles of the New Testament that have laid the foundation for the Church.

In this series, we are going to deal with the subject of spiritual warfare and bring correct, biblical teaching to this often-misunderstood subject.

There are three different aspects to spiritual warfare:

    • Taking control of our minds
    • Crucifying the flesh
    • Dealing with the enemy

We must always remember that the real battle with Satan was won at the Cross and the resurrection by Jesus Christ.

We must approach spiritual warfare from a place of already obtained victory (by Jesus) instead of us trying to get the victory.

1 John 5:4 NKJV For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.

No evil force has ever prevailed over the power of God or the people of God, and never will!

    How Real Warfare Begins

Most believers who have fallen in recent times would not have fallen if they had not given the devil some kind of foothold in their mind.

Demon spirits have absolutely no power to bring about destruction unless they can find an open door into a person’s mind.

The Holy Spirit is faithful to convict us of any areas in our lives that leave us vulnerable for attack.

He will urge us to repent and change before the devils builds strongholds in our thinking. However, it is still up to us to see that these opened doors are slammed shut and forever closed.

Demon spirits cannot destroy without an open door into a person’s soul – and such an entrance can only be given by way of permission.

The one thing that the Lord will not let the enemy do is override someone’s will.

Most battles are fought and won because we are faithful to heed the Holy Spirit’s warnings to deal with some area of our lives before it got out of control.

Spiritual warfare is not a momentary gust of emotion to temporarily frighten away the devil. Quite the opposite!

Real spiritual warfare is a specific condition of the mind that involves a lifelong commitment.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NKJV (3) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. (4) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, (5) casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

In verse 5, the word “warfare” is translated from the Greek word “stratos” and is a huge key in defeating the attacks of the enemy. It is where we get the word “strategy”.

Notice that the verse tells is that the weapons are weapons of strategy.

In order for spiritual weapons to work effectively, they must be accompanied with a divine strategy on how to use them.

God has given believers everything they need to defeat the enemy, but they don’t have a strategy on how to use their weapons or what to do when the attack comes.

Weapons absolutely will not be successful if there is no strategy behind them.

We can have a plan for when attacks come from the enemy. We can know what to do when troubles come as they will.

But in these scriptures, Paul is addressing a stronghold that is built up in our minds that becomes a playground for the enemy.

Not every stronghold is the same. Each one will require its own strategy to be overcome.

This mandates that you spend time praying in the Spirit, reading the Word and seeking the mind of God.

In your own strength and wisdom, you will never conceive a plan that will deliver you.

When strongholds become deeply rooted in the mind, only the Holy Spirit can give you a strategy on how to pull them down.

The Holy Spirit will show you how to use your God-given weapons, and He will instruct you on when and what to attack.

2 Corinthians 10:4 NKJV (4) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,

Spiritual weapons have absolutely nothing to do with the flesh or activity of the flesh.

Regardless of how good the flesh looks or how loud the flesh roars, it is never intended to fight a spiritual foe.

Many believers try to use outward, physical, fleshly techniques in their attempt to defeat the enemy and call it “spiritual warfare.”

The danger of fleshly weapons is that they produce guilt, condemnation, and legalism because they do not provide the victory many need. These attempts will never “be enough.”

Galatians 5:1 NKJV Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

    Some “fleshly” warfare techniques include:

Christians needing to be delivered from demons and so they should work themselves up and make themselves vomit in order for demons to come out.

Warring tongues – volume does not scare the devil. Have you heard some of the head banging punk rock music that was out years ago?

It is the authority that Jesus has given you and that resides in your spirit that causes the devil to obey.

Sometimes you have to be loud in prayer and in tongues to overcome the loud voice of your own flesh and mind.

These things become religious in nature and fleshly and are really saying:

    • “Let me do something to earn my freedom!”
    • “Christ’s work alone surely cannot be enough!”
    • “Let me scream from my freedom!”
    • “Let me purge myself of demon spirits!”

Remember, we always approach spiritual warfare from a place of victory already obtained for me by Jesus Christ and His finished work.

We can add absolutely nothing to what Jesus did for us at the Cross!

Our goal in life is not to fight for our freedom and deliverance; rather, it is to freely accept our deliverance and freedom that has been procured for us.

We have been given divinely empowered weapons to resist the enemy’s attacks and MAINTAIN the blessings of our salvation that are ours.

A correct view of redemption will clear up many wrong ideas about the devil and spiritual warfare.

There are four Greek words that are used to denote “redemption” in the New Testament:

    1. “Agoridzo” – slave marketplace

These were grossly inhuman place where people were treated in a disgusting way. They were paraded in front of potential buyers where the “merchandise” could be beat upon, slapped, spat upon to see if the slaves could take it. Slaves had no personal worth; viewed no better than animals.

Because of sin, the world had sunk to a place where the world was a global slave market, where Satan had gripped the hearts of men and filled their natures with violence and destruction.

The world Jesus was born into was a world of complete captivity.

Romans 5:12 NKJV Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Romans 7:14 NKJV For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. (transfer of property)

Because we were the “merchandise” of the slave market, Satan would slap, kick, beat, spit upon us and abuse us in every way that he could.

Once that treatment was over, he would place us back on the auction block and sell us again to some other form of bondage.

God sent His Son into the enemy’s “slave market” with one purpose in mind: so Jesus could secure man’s deliverance from Satan’s bondage once and for all.

1 Corinthians 6:20 NKJV (20) For you were bought at a price (agoridzo); therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 7:23 NKJV (23) You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.

Revelation 5:9 NKJV And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

    1. “Exagoridzo” – one who has come to purchase a slave OUT OF the slave market.

This word signifies the purchase of a slave in order to permanently set that slave FREE from that heinous place, NEVER to be put on the trading block of slavery again.

Galatians 3:13 NKJV Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”),

Paul is saying to us that not only did Jesus’ sacrificial death not only paid the penalty for our sin, but His death also removed us from living under the curse forever.

Galatians 4:4-5 NKJV But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, (5) to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Slaves did not come cheaply. If the auctioneer knew that a buyer really wanted a particular slave, he could demand unbelievably high prices. We must therefore ask, “What price did Jesus pay for our freedom from Satan’s power.

    1. “Lutroo” – captive set free by the payment of a ransom.

By using this word, Paul is telling is that our salvation is not free. On the contrary, our freedom from Satan’s power was extremely expensive.

What was the ransom that Jesus paid to procure our freedom from Satan’s bondage and ownership? His own blood!

In fact, the price Jesus paid for us was the highest price ever paid for a slave in the history of mankind.

Ephesians 1:7 NKJV In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Colossians 1:13-14 NKJV (13) He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, (14) in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Colossians 1:20 NKJV and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

Hebrews 9:12 NKJV Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

1 Peter 1:18-19 NKJV knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, (19) but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

    1. “Apolutrosis” – to ransom or redeem and return us to the condition we were in before our captivity began.

Jesus paid the price to permanently free and restore us to the full status of sons!

Ephesians 1:7 NKJV In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

In using the word here for “redemption” Paul declares that we were forever delivered from Satan’s power – we were forever removed from that dreadful place of slavery – and now we have been fully restored by the blood of Jesus Christ and placed back into a right-standing with God.

We are fully restored and fully set free from Satan’s former grip over us!

Galatians 4:7 NKJV Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Romans 8:16-17 NKJV The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, (17) and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

No evil force has ever prevailed over the power of God or the people of God, and never will!

The words “war” and “warfare” are only used 5 times in all of the new testament. Not once were they used in the Gospels during Jesus ministry.

In these verses, the devil is not mentioned one time.

1 Timothy 1:18 NKJV This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,

In this verse, Paul is telling Timothy to remain loyal the call of God and fight the fight of faith. The devil is not mentioned here either.

2 Timothy 2:4 NKJV No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

Paul is telling Timothy to keep his life free of clutter and stay single minded as a soldier would.

James 4:1 NKJV Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

Battling the flesh can be a war.

In light of this, it is abundantly clear that the New Testament usage of the words “war” and “warfare” primarily has to do with conquering the flesh and taking charge of our minds.

Yes, the devil may attack the mind, and he may attempt to energize the flesh to work against us. However, if we will keep our minds and our flesh under the control of the Holy Spirit, most of the spiritual warfare we encounter in life will have already been settled.

    How Real Warfare Begins

Most believers who have fallen in recent times would not have fallen if they had not given the devil some kind of foothold in their mind.

    • Demon spirits have absolutely no power to bring about destruction unless they can find an open door into a person’s mind.

The Holy Spirit is faithful to convict us of any areas in our lives that leave us vulnerable for attack.

He will urge us to repent and change before the devils builds strongholds in our thinking. However, it is still up to us to see that these opened doors are slammed shut and forever closed.

    • Demon spirits cannot destroy without an open door into a person’s soul – and such an entrance can only be given by way of permission.

The one thing that the Lord will not let the enemy do is override someone’s will.

    • Regardless of how many demon spirits have been assigned to destroy a believer, that person must cooperate with the enemy’s suggestions before temptation can overtake him and ruin his witness.

Ultimately you and I are responsible for our own failure or success in obeying God in this life. We cannot shift the blame for our failure to demonic attack.

    • You can scream that the devil is after your money until you are blue in the face. But if you have failed to balance your checkbook or were irresponsible in paying your bills, you opened the door to that financial attack.
    • You can declare that the enemy is attempting to afflict you with sickness. But if you abuse your body by not eating right or not getting rest, or exercising, you have opened the door for your body to be attacked.
    • You can say that your marriage is under attack from the devil but if you speak harshly to your spouse, never spend any time with them, or have not made your marriage a priority in your life, you have thrown the door wide open for the enemy to attack and destroy your marriage.

Sometimes there are genuine attacks on our lives from the enemy that catch us off guard when we are doing everything that we know to do in obedience to the Lord.

We see that this happened in Jesus ministry:

Mark 4:35-41 NKJV On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” (36) Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. (37) And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. (38) But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (39) Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. (40) But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (41) And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

In verse 37, the phrase, “And a great windstorm arose…” comes from the Greek word “ginomai” which means “something that happens unexpectedly or something that catches one off guard.”

    Acts 10:9,10 Peter falls into a trance…

Revelation 1:10 John wrote, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day…”

Jesus was on His way to Gadara where the Gadarene demoniac lived. The enemy wanted to stop Jesus from being able to deliver one of his prized possessions and thus perform a great miracle.

    • This attack of the enemy came right before one of Jesus’ greatest triumphs in ministry.

So, what do you do when an attack like this arises?

Make sure that you have left no doors open for the attack by obeying the Spirit’s promptings in the various areas of your life.

Then, like the Lord Jesus, you must rise up to take authority over the wind and the waves.

There are also different reasons for the storm coming.

    1. The storm of disobedience – Jonah and his disobedience.

The simple way out of the storm like that is to repent and your storm will throw you up on the beach and you can continue on with your life.

    1. The storm that arises because you follow what the Lord as told you – obedience.

The disciples encountered a storm when they did as Jesus commanded and were going to the other side.

The command of faith stills the storm.

    1. The storm of association arises because of the people you are with.

Paul encountered a storm and hardship because of the people he was with.

Simple repentance will not work and the command of faith will not work you need to simply endure.

Mark 4:39 NKJV Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

When everything was said and done, Jesus matched a great storm with a great calm.

Whatever the devil does, Jesus wants to match that attack with an even greater blessing and victory in your life!

It is not so much an action as it is a determined and committed attitude of the mind.

In spite of all of the attacks that Apostle Paul withstood, he never failed morally or compromised in his ministry.

Paul’s personal consecration to the Lord was his greatest defense against the enemy.

Nothing in him cooperated with the devil’s devices and temptations. Paul’s personal holiness paralyzed the devil’s ability to make Paul fall morally.

    • The thought of an instant cure is very alluring to the uncommitted and spiritually immature who are looking for a “quick fix” to change their deeply rooted, habitual, and often self-imposed problems.

This is the reason many have gotten off course where spiritual warfare is concerned.

There is no such thing as the instant cure. It is a process!

  • Armed and Dangerous – Part 1

In this series, we are going to deal with the subject of spiritual warfare and bring correct, biblical teaching to this often-misunderstood subject.

It seems with almost any Bible subject, people can have the tendency to take it to the extreme and get off base and away from the Bible. Unfortunately, this often does great harm to the individual as well as the Body of Christ.

The Scripture instructs us to deal with the unseen, invisible forces that have been marshaled against us.

    Mark 16:17 NKJV And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

Ephesians 6:12 NKJV For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Setting people free from Satan’s power is a primary concern of Jesus Christ, and it should be a concern of ours as well.

1 John 3:8 NKJV … For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 10:38 NKJV how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Spiritual Warfare actual has much more to it than just dealing with the devil.

There are actually three different aspects to spiritual warfare:

    • Taking control of our minds
    • Crucifying the flesh
    • Dealing with the enemy

The truth is, the devil’s attacks against our lives would not work if our flesh did not cooperate.

Colossians 3:5 NKJV Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Romans 6:1-2 NKJV What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? (2) Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

Living the crucified life is a critical part of spiritual warfare.

    Rick Renner says:

“A person can scream at the devil all day long, but if that person has willfully permitted some area of his mind to go unchecked and unguarded – if he is aware of sin but has not been willing to deal with it – has opened the door for an attack on himself.

In that case, all his prayers against the devil will be to no avail because his real enemy is not the devil. Rather it is his own carnal mind and flesh which must be submitted to the control of the Holy Spirit in order to eradicate these attacks.

“If people only focus on the devil as they pursue the subject of spiritual warfare and fail to consider other equally as important areas, their emphasis on spiritual warfare can and will be very damaging to them.”

We must always remember that the real battle with Satan was won at the Cross and the resurrection by Jesus Christ.

This same victorious Christ who single handedly defeated the devil lives in us in the person of the Holy Spirit!

1 John 4:4 NKJV You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Colossians 2:11-12, 15 NKJV (11) In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, (12) buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (15) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Greek translation: He completely stripped principalities and powers and left them utterly naked with nothing left at their disposal to retaliate. Jesus boldly, confidently, and loudly exposed and displayed this now defunct foe to Heaven’s hosts.

We must approach spiritual warfare from a place of already obtained victory (by Jesus) instead of trying to get the victory.

As we approach the subject of spiritual warfare, we must guard against superstitious, homemade remedies about spiritual warfare.

We must base our understanding on the sound teachings of the Bible.

Example – teachings that the best ways to deal with demonic forces in the heavenlies or the prince of the power of the air, we must climb to the highest floors of skyscrapers or rent an airplane so we can get where they are.

If this is necessary and how it is done, then Jesus never got the victory over the devil or used any authority because none of those things existed in His day.

Yet somehow, Jesus was able to fully carry out His earthly ministry and fulfill God’s will.

Ignorance of God’s Word always leaves the Christian and the Body of Christ vulnerable.

Hosea 4:6a NKJV My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…

Sometimes we emphasize spiritual warfare and think that spiritual warfare is especially necessary now because things are so much darker now than they ever have been.

The challenges that we face spiritually today are really no different than or greater than those of preceding generations of believers.

If you study the pagan culture of the Greeks and Romans of the early Church day, they were by far more worse than the historians could tell us.

It is clear, Satan was out to destroy the early Church as much as he is out to destroy the modern-day Church.

Rather than be destroyed, the Early Church arose in the power of the Spirit to meet the challenge – just as we will arise in our own day to meet any challenge the enemy would bring before us!

The same armor of God that Paul wrote about in Ephesians 6 worked for the early Church just as it will work for us.

Satan tried to destroy the Church at its inception – and it is certain that he will try to attack and victimize the Church as we approach the coming of the Lord.

But just as the early church arose in the power of the Spirit to meet the challenge, so will we!

1 John 5:4 NKJV For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.

The reality is the harder the devil hit the early Church the more it thrived, grew and multiplied. The same will happen today!

No evil force has ever prevailed over the power of God or the people of God, and never will!

The words “war” and “warfare” are only used 5 times in all of the new testament. Not once were they used in the Gospels during Jesus ministry.

  • The Holy Spirit – Part 9

The Holy Spirit – Part 9

1 Corinthians 12:1 BBE But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 NKJV (1) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: (2) You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. (3) Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. (4) There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. (5) There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. (6) And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. (7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: (8) for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, (9) to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, (10) to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

In verse 3 notice Paul said that the Holy Ghost will always exalt the Lordship of Jesus, not the lordship of a man or even draw attention to some man.

The gifts of the Spirit are categorized:

    Three Revelation Gifts:

    • The word of wisdom
    • The word of knowledge
    • The discerning of spirits

    Three Power Gifts:

    • The gift of faith
    • The working of miracles
    • The gifts of healings

    Three Utterance or Inspirational gifts:

    • Prophecy
    • Divers kinds of tongues
    • Interpretation of tongues

These are often in manifestation together such as tongues and interpretation of tongues.

    Word of Knowledge:

The Word of Knowledge is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Ghost of certain facts in the mind of God.

A word is a fragmentary part of a sentence just as the Word of Knowledge is a fragmentary part of the complete knowledge that God has.

The Word of Knowledge can come through several different means: inward revelation, audible voice, an angel, dreams, tongues and interpretation, etc.

    The Word of Wisdom

The Word of Wisdom – a supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the divine purpose and plan in the mind and will of God. It is the revelation of the plans and purposes of God.

The difference between the Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom is that the word of knowledge is always present tense or concerning something that has happened in the past. The word of wisdom always speaks of the future.

    The Gift of Faith

The Gift of Faith is a supernatural manifestation of Holy Spirit whereby a believer is empowered with special faith, or wonder-working faith and it is beyond simple saving faith.

    • The gift of faith is given to the believer so that he can receive miracles.
    • The working of miracles is so the believer can work miracles.

You start with simple faith in stepping into any of the manifestations of the Spirit as He prompts you, then the manifestation steps in to do the work.

When special faith is in operation, the believer will believe God in such a way, that God honors their word as if it is their own and miraculously causes it to come to pass.

This special faith cannot be increased by hearing the Word of God like simple saving faith can.

The gift of faith employs active faith that expects a miracle.

Smith Wigglesworth said that if you will take a step of ordinary faith, when you come to the end of that faith, very often this supernatural gift of special faith will take over. One reason more folks don’t see the manifestation of special faith operating in their lives is that they don’t first use what faith they already have.

The Gift of the Working of Miracles

The Gift of the Working of Miracles: a supernatural intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature, a temporary suspension of the accustomed order, or an interruption in the system of nature as we know it, operated by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Gift of Faith vs. the Working of Miracles

The working of miracles is used to deliver people from unavoidable danger or harm. The gift of faith would carry a person through the danger with great peace and calm without the person being harmed at all.

Remember, the gift of faith receives the miracle, where the working of miracles does the miracle.

The Greek word for “miracles” in 1 Corinthians 12:10 is “dunamis” and  means: acts of powers, explosions of almightiness or impelling, staggering wonders or astonishments.

    The Gift of Healings

The Gifts of Healing have nothing to do Gifts of healings are manifested for the supernatural healing of sickness and disease without any natural source or means. The purpose of the Gifts of Healing is to deliver the sick and to destroy the works of the devil in the human body.

The Working of Miracles was more prevalent in the Old Testament than in the New Testament and Gifts of Healing are more prevalent in the New Testament than in the Old Testament.

Notice in some verses that “gifts of healing” and “gifts of healings” appear. Vines Expository Dictionary states that in the Greek the word for healing is actually in the plural in all instances.

One possible explanation to the plurality of the healings is due to the many types of diseases known and unknown to mankind. One gift might not possibly heal every kind of disease.

    Utterance Gifts:

The Gift of Diverse Kinds of Tongues

The Gift of Divers kinds of tongues is a supernatural utterance in an unknown tongue.

The Gifts of Tongues is the most prominent as it is often the most manifested gift in our services, it is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and it is only found in the Church Age.

Divers Kinds of Tongues is supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in languages never learned by the speaker, nor understood by the speaker, nor necessarily understood by the hearer.

Speaking in tongues has nothing to do with linguistic ability; it has nothing to do with the mind or intellect of man. It is a vocal miracle of the Holy Spirit.

Tongues is unique to this dispensation.

Tongues is the initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

The Gift of Interpretation of tongues is a supernatural revealing of that which has been said in an unknown tongue.

Remember, interpretation of tongues is not a translation of a message in tongues.

The purpose of this gift is simply to render the gift of tongues understandable to the hearers so the whole church congregation as well as the one who gave the utterance in an unknown tongue, may know what has been said and be edified.

1 Corinthians 14:27 NKJV (27)  If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

Notice this verse is not referring to utterances but rather people and the number to give an utterance. He said to let two or three people speak and let it be by course or in succession. (Not speaking at once)

Often times, during interpretation of tongues, as it concludes the speaker may flow over into prophecy.

    Interpretation in our Private Prayer

1 Corinthians 14:13 NKJV (13) Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

It is right for us to pray that God will allow us to interpret our prayers in other tongues but this is always as He wills. Sometimes  He will want you to know and sometimes He does not.

    Interpretation in a Public Service

1 Corinthians 14:27 NKJV (27) If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

Paul is not saying there can only be two or three utterances in other tongues. He is saying that there should not be more than one to interpret at a time.

    The Gift of Prophecy

The gift of prophecy is greatest of the utterance gifts because it takes the other two, divers kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues to equal this one gift.

The Gift of Prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known tongue.

Divers kinds of tongues is a supernatural utterance in an unknown tongue.

Interpretation of tongues is a supernatural showing forth of that which has been said in an unknown tongue.

In the Hebrew, prophecy means to flow forth, bubble forth like a fountain, and to spring forth.

In the Greek, the word prophecy means to speak for God or be His spokesman.

1 Corinthians 14:1 NKJV (1)  Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

1 Corinthians 14:3-5 NKJV (3) But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. (4) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. (5) I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

1 Corinthians 14:39 NKJV (39)  Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

In the simple gift of prophecy there is no revelation, only edification, exhortation and comfort.

In the office of the prophet we do find that revelation or foretelling does come forth through the vehicle of prophecy.

In other words, with the Gift of Prophecy you are forth telling but with the Office of the Prophet, you may be foretelling.

The gift of prophecy goes beyond speaking by our own reasoning processes and intellect.

A prophet will prophesy, but one who prophesies would not necessarily be a prophet.

It may be involved in preaching as preaching may be an inspired utterance.

It may be involved in witnessing or sharing because one may be inspired to share something with someone else. For instance, one may be led to share a scripture or encouraging word with someone. That can be the Gift of Prophecy in operation.

Someone who stands in the office of the Prophet must have operating in his/her ministry the Gift of Prophecy plus at least two of the revelation gifts: the word of wisdom, word of knowledge or the discerning of spirits.

New Testament Example of the Gift of Prophecy:

Acts 21:8-9 NKJV (8)  On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. (9)  Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

New Testament Example of the Office of the Prophet:

Acts 21:10-11 NKJV (10)  And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. (11)  When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ “

Simple gift of prophecy in private prayer along with the word of wisdom is available to every believer.

Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs are a form of prophecy as they are an inspired utterance given to us by the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18-19 NKJV (18)  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (19)  speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

1 Corinthians 14:33 NKJV (33) For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14:40 NKJV (40) Let all things be done decently and in order.

I believe if we will follow God’s instructions in these matters, even visitors can understand and be blessed by what is happening.

In order to be used by God in the utterance gifts as with all of the gifts, you must be in tune with the Holy Spirit.

  • The Holy Spirit – Part 8

The Holy Spirit – Part 8

1 Corinthians 12:1 BBE But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching.

The Gift of the Working of Miracles: a supernatural intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature, a temporary suspension of the accustomed order, or an interruption in the system of nature as we know it, operated by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Joshua 10:12-14 NKJV Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” (13) So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. (14) And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the LORD heeded the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.

John 2:1-11 NKJV On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. (2) Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. (3) And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” (4) Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” (5) His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” (6) Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. (7) Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. (8) And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. (9) When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. (10) And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” (11) This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

John 6:5-14 NKJV Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” (6) But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. (7) Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” (8) One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, (9) “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” (10) Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. (11) And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. (12) So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” (13) Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. (14) Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

In the New Testament we see more of the Gifts of healing then the working of miracles but there are some situations where it could have been both.

Acts 6:8 NKJV (8)  And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.

Acts 8:6 NKJV (6)  And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

Acts 15:12 NKJV (12)  Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles.

Acts 19:11-12 NKJV (11)  Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, (12)  so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

    The Gift of Healings

Gifts of healings are manifested for the supernatural healing of sickness and disease without any natural source or means. The purpose of the Gifts of Healing is to deliver the sick and to destroy the works of the devil in the human body.

The Gifts of Healing have nothing to do with medical science or natural learning.

The Working of Miracles was more prevalent in the Old Testament than in the New Testament and Gifts of Healing are more prevalent in the New Testament than in the Old Testament.

Notice in these verses that “gifts of healing” and “gifts of healings” appear. Vines Expository Dictionary states that in the Greek the word for healing is actually in the plural in all instances.

One possible explanation to the plurality of the healings is due to the many types of diseases known and unknown to mankind. One gift might not possibly heal every kind of disease.

Jesus operated in the Gifts of Healings and Working of Miracles in His ministry.

Jesus did not perform any miracles or heal anybody as the Son of God. He did it as a man anointed by the Holy Spirit and did none of these things until after He was anointed.

Jesus was just as much the Son of God when He was 25 as He was when the Holy Ghost came upon Him at 30 but He did not heal anyone when He was 25.

John 3:34 NLT For He is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives Him the Spirit without limit.

By this verse there is an implication that Jesus operated in the Spirit without measure and therefore we as Christians individually operate in the Spirit with measure but collectively as the Body of Christ we operate together in the Spirit without measure.

Therefore just one person in the Church is never going to have the measure of success in ministering in the Gifts that Jesus did but collectively we will.

Jesus operated in all of the Gifts of the Spirit without measure except for tongues and interpretation which was reserved for the Church Age which Jesus ushered in.

Difference between receiving healing by faith and the Gifts of Healings:

You can receive healing for yourself by believing God’s Word for yourself and acting on it.

Gifts of Healings are manifested through another person to you.

It is a special manifestation through one person to another who is in need.

    Acts 2:1-4            Day of Pentecost

Acts 8:5-17          Samaritans are saved under Philip’s ministry

Acts 9:3-18          Ananias lays hands on Paul and he is filled

Acts 10:44-46     Cornelius and his household are saved and filled with the Holy Spirit

Acts 19:1-7         Ephesians are saved, baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit as Paul ministered to them

1 Corinthians 14:39 NKJV (39)  Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:3 NKJV (3)  But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

In the simple gift of prophecy there is no revelation, only edification, exhortation and comfort.

  • The Holy Spirit – Part 7

The Holy Spirit – Part 7

Examples of the Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom operating together in the Scriptures:

    1. John on the Isle of Patmos and the Book of Revelation
    2. Ananias in Acts 9:10-16

Acts 9:10-16 NKJV Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” (11) So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. (12) And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” (13) Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. (14) And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.” (15) But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. (16) For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

Examples of the Word of Wisdom in the scriptures:

    1. Noah – Genesis 6:13-18

Genesis 6:13-18 NKJV And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. (14) Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. (15) And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. (16) You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. (17) And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. (18) But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark–you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

    1. Joseph – Genesis 37 – 50
    1. Agabus the Prophet – Acts 11:28; Acts 21:10-13

Acts 11:28 NKJV Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Acts 21:10-13 NKJV And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. (11) When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ” (12) Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. (13) Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

    1. Apostle Paul – Acts 27:10-11

Acts 27:10-11 NKJV saying, “Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.” (11) Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.

    Gift of Discerning of Spirits:

The Gift of Discerning of spirits: the seeing or hearing in the realm of spirits.

It is somewhat limited because it is only revelation in regards to the realm of the spirit and not as broad as the word of knowledge or the word of wisdom.

    • It is not the gift of discernment.
    • It is not the gift of discerning the faults of others.
    • It is not limited to the discerning of devils.

The gift of discerning of spirits is supernatural insight into the spirit world where there are Divine spirits as well as evil spirits.

It can be discerning the Similitude of God. (form or likeness – No man can see God and live.)

Exodus 33:18-23 NKJV And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” (19) Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” (20) But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” (21) And the LORD said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. (22) So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. (23) Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

Isaiah 6:1 NKJV In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

The gift of discerning of spirits also reveals the kind of spirit behind a supernatural manifestation – whether evil or God. They can come from either God or the devil.

Acts 16:16-18 NKJV Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. (17) This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” (18) And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.

You don’t necessarily need the discerning of spirits to know when something is out of order. You can know that simply by the inward witness of your spirit.

You can also be aware of spiritual activity by the word of knowledge because you may not see into the realm of the spirit but you may know by revelation.

Any time in the scriptures that someone had an angelic visitation and “saw” the angel, this was through the gift of Discerning of Spirits.

Remember, these manifestations are to operate in the life of believers not just preachers and great ministers.

They are, however, as the Holy Spirit wills and not as we will.

    The Gift of Faith

The Gifts of faith is not the same as saving faith.

Ephesians 2:8 NKJV (8)  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

Saving faith comes to us by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17).

It is not the same as the fruit of the Spirit called faith which actually is faithfulness.

We rely on the simple saving faith to receive answers to our prayers because if it was based on special faith, then some could say they did not receive answers to their prayers because they were not operating in special faith. This is by the Spirit and would thus make God a respecter of persons.

Special faith receives a miracle while the working of miracles actually works the miracle.

    Different Kinds of Faith:

    • Saving Faith – which leads one to salvation
    • General Faith – which every believer possesses
    • Fruit of Faith (faithfulness) fruit of the recreated human spirit
    • Gift of Faith – Supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit

Fruit is something that is grown and this gift of faith is given.

When special faith is in operation, the believer will believe God in such a way, that God honors their word as if it is His own and miraculously causes it to come to pass.

This special faith is not the faith that one receives to answers to prayers for the most part.

That answer comes to you based on the Word and simple faith in God’s Word.

The Word says that this gift, as do the others, operate as the Holy Spirit wills. If answers to prayers depended on this special faith would have to wait for a manifestation of the Spirit but we all know that one can receive answers to prayers anytime that the believer wills or desires.

This special faith cannot be increased by hearing the Word of God like simple saving faith can.

Daniel 6:23 NKJV (23)  Now the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was found on him, because he believed in his God.

Daniel received a miracle, he did not work a miracle. (gift of faith vs. working of miracles)

Now we know that this was the gift of faith even in the Old Testament because there were even Christians who were martyred for their faith in the New Testament that were thrown in the lion’s den and were eaten by the lions.

Mark 4:38-39 NKJV (38)  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (39)  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

Jesus went to sleep aided by special faith, but notice He spoke to the storm with simple faith.

Many times we see in the scriptures this special faith in operation in the face of danger. This is a calmness that comes beyond the natural.

The gift of faith works in conjunction with the working of miracles to actively work a miracle.

The gift of faith employs active faith that expects a miracle.

The gift of faith is a divine enabling by the Spirit of God that causes what is spoken or desired by man or spoken by God to eventually come to pass.

We saw this sometimes as the Patriarchs spoke over their children to pronounce blessing and curses that would sometimes take years to come to pass.

That word will come to pass.

Smith Wigglesworth said that if you will take a step of ordinary faith, when you come to the end of that faith, very often this supernatural gift of special faith will take over. One reason more folks don’t see the manifestation of special faith operating in their lives is that they don’t first use what faith they already have.

The working of miracles is an act whereas that the gift of faith is a process.

  • The Holy Spirit – Part 6

The Holy Spirit – Part 6

1 Corinthians 12:1 BBE But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching.

Benefits of Praying In Other Tongues
    • Tongues is primarily for a believer’s own personal, spiritual edification.
    • God has given us a divine means by which we can speak to Him supernaturally.
    • Tongues is a means of building yourself up spiritually.
    • Praying in other tongues is praying in line with God’s perfect will.
    • Praying in tongues is a means of magnifying God.

Acts 10:45-46 NKJV And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. (46) For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

By praying in the Spirit, we make God bigger in us. (God does not get bigger but He becomes bigger to us.)

    • Speaking in tongues helps us to stay conscious of the Holy Spirit’s presence.

John 14:16-17 NKJV And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever– (17) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

    • Tongues will aid you in worshipping God.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 NKJV (14) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. (15) What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

    • Praying in tongues will stimulate your faith.

Jude 1:20 NKJV But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

Faith does not come by praying in the Spirit; it comes by hearing the Word.

How does it stimulate our faith? Just simply but the very act alone requires faith.

    • Praying in tongues gives spiritual refreshing.

Isaiah 28:11-12 NKJV For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, (12) To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing…”

    • Praying in tongues is the introduction or doorway to the Gifts of the Spirit.

(Tongues is not the doorway to the fruit of the Spirit.)

Introduction to the Gifts of the Spirit

These are listed in the order of their importance.

Of the three gifts of revelation, the word of wisdom is most important because it brings supernatural revelation into the plan and purpose of God.

Of the three gifts of power, the gift of faith is the best gift because it is the supernatural ability to work a miracle.

Of the three gifts of utterance, the gift of prophecy is best because it is complete in and of itself and it brings edification, encouragement, and comfort to the Body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 14:3)

    Word of Knowledge:

The Word of Knowledge is the supernatural revelation by the Holy Ghost of certain facts in the mind of God.

A word is a fragmentary part of a sentence just as the Word of Knowledge is a fragmentary part of the complete knowledge that God has.

This is not called the gift of knowledge. This is not referring to natural knowledge. It is supernatural.

The Word of Knowledge is not a profound knowledge of the Bible.

2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV (15)  Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

If this was the case we could ask the Lord to manifest this gift so we would not have to study the Bible.

The Word of Knowledge is not knowledge that comes from walking closely with God.

One can certainly gain some spiritual insight from walking with God but this is not the supernatural revelation that comes by the Holy Spirit.

Biblical Examples of the Word of Knowledge:

1 Samuel 9:3,5,6,15,16,19,20 – The Lord revealed to Samuel the status of the lost donkeys.

1Kings 19:14-18 – The Lord encouraged a discouraged Elijah by revealing to him that he wasn’t the only one that left serving God.

2 Kings 5:21-26 – The Lord revealed to Elijah the hypocrisy of Gehazi the servant.

2 Kings 6:8-12 – The Lord reveals to Elisha the plans of the King that were secret

John 4:7-26 – The Spirit revealed to Jesus the marital status of the women at the well.

Acts 5:1-4 – The Lord reveals to Peter that Ananias and Sapphira had lied about the amount they had sold their property.

Revelation 1:10-20 – John received revelation from Jesus about the seven churches that he could not have possibly known by natural means as he was exiled on the Isle of Patmos.

Acts 9:10-12 – There is no way the Ananias could have known the specific details about the location of Saul unless they were revealed to him by the Spirit in a vision.

God knew about everyone that was praying at that moment but He only revealed to Ananias about Saul.

Acts 10:9-19 In verse 19, following the vision as Peter was meditating on what the Lord had shown him, the Spirit spoke to him and said, “…three men seek thee.”

  • The Holy Spirit – Part 5

The Holy Spirit – Part 5

1 Corinthians 12:1 NKJV (1) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

The word “gifts was added by the translators. This verse actually says,

1 Corinthians 12:1 BBE But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching.

The Benefits of Praying in Other Tongues
    • Tongues is primarily for a believer’s own personal, spiritual edification.

1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV (4) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

Tongues is the initial evidence of one having been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

    • God has given us a divine means by which we can speak to Him supernaturally.

1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV (2) For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:2 AMP For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].

Moffat’s Translation: “…in the spirit he speaketh divine secrets.”

1 Corinthians 14:14 NIV (14) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

Ephesians 6:18 NKJV praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

There is praying in other tongues and then there is praying in the Spirit. They can be one in the same but praying in the Spirit can also be praying with the spirit of prophecy.

Prophecy is a divinely inspired utterance. You can be praying in the Spirit in your known tongue and your mind still not be fruitful because the words are coming out of your spirit by the Holy Spirit.

    • Tongues is a means of building yourself up spiritually.

1 Corinthians 14:4 AMP He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness].

The actual Greek word for “edify” more accurately means to “charge up”. In other words, as we pray in tongues, we are charging up our spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jude 1:20 NKJV But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

You can’t edify people unless you have first been edified.

The Holy Spirit can lead us to pray in other tongues to build us up spiritually for something He know is coming.

Ephesians 3:14-16 NKJV For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, (15) from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, (16) that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,

These were Spirit-filled people that needed to be strengthened with might by the Holy Spirit in the inner man. How? By praying in other tongues.

    • Praying in other tongues is praying in line with God’s perfect will.

Romans 8:19 NKJV For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:22 NKJV For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

Romans 8:26-27 KJV  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  (27)  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Underline or circle “helpeth”, “infirmities”, “what”, “ought”, “intercession”.

Helpeth – sunantilambano – three separate words

Sun – partnership and cooperation, this verse is not what the Holy Ghost does for us, but does in conjunction and partnership with us, side by side with us

    2 Cor. 6:1 co-laborers together with God.

Anti – against, not just positionally against, but a person filled with rage.

Lambanomai – to take something to yourself, forcibly seize something

Infirmities (asthenios) – generic which embraces all kinds of sicknesses and diseases

English (sick) which is applicable to all diseases or sicknesses.

Five categories of sickness that Jesus healed in His ministry and in this one Greek word asthenios is encapsulated in all of these words, fit like a glove.

    1. Nosos – Matthew 4:23 (“sickness”) – terminal condition for which there is no natural cure. (example – cancer, AIDS)
    1. Malakian – Matthew 4:23 (“disease”) – disease which attacks the nerves, muscles, or bones. You can live with this disease but it is a crippling or debilitating disease.
    1. Kakos – Matthew 15:22 (“greviously”) greviously vexed with demon spirits – someone that is mentally confused or mentally ill.
    1. Mastigos – Mark 5:35 (“plague”) normally translated “plague”. This is an old word of torture, where a victim would be beaten with a cat-of-nine-tails bringing them to the edge of death, take them back to their cell, let them heal until they are recovered, then take him back to beat him again. This would never be enough to kill him. (migraine headaches, allergic reaction, etc.)
    1. Arrhostos – Mark 6:13; 16:18; 1 Cor. 11:30 – someone so physically ill that they have lost all consciousness, comatose. (Mark 16:18) (Mark 6:35 “a few sick folk” those that were comatose).

Romans 8:26 is about spiritual weaknesses not physical diseases.

The Holy Spirit is actually saying that if you do not have the help of the Holy Ghost you are just like someone that is afflicted with all of these types of diseases.

Your infirmities (weaknesses) do not eliminate you from His help, they qualify you for His help.

What – (ti) – the very little thing. It underscores that we don’t even know how to necessarily pray for the small things not to mention the larger issues in life. We are so limited in our view but He can see it ALL.

Ought (dei)– as the new situation requires and dictates, as the new problem demands.

Intercession – (huperentugchano) – this is the only time that this word is used in the entire New Testament.

This word paints the picture of someone who has come upon someone who has fallen into some kind of quandary.

It would be as if someone has fallen into a deep cavern and is stuck. There is someone who immediately swings into action to rescue and deliver the one who is in trouble. It conveys the idea of a full scale rescue operation.

When we do not know how we should pray for that situation, the Holy Spirit swings into a full-scale rescue operation. But in order to do this, He falls into that place with you. Now you are no longer facing that situation alone, for the Holy Spirit has stepped into your dilemma and is initiating a rescue plan to get you out of that mess!

The Holy Spirit feels everything that you feel. He understands the complete inadequacy you are experiencing. He willingly joins you in your circumstances sharing your emotions and frustrations. Then He begins to put a supernatural plan of rescue into operation to get you out of that problem.

    Romans 8:26 BBE  And in the same way the Spirit is a help to our feeble hearts: for we are not able to make prayer to God in the right way; but the Spirit puts our desires into words which are not in our power to say;

The Holy Spirit – Part 4

1 Corinthians 12:1 NKJV (1) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

The word “gifts was added by the translators. This verse actually says,

1 Corinthians 12:1 BBE But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching.

How To Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
(OR How To Minister the Baptism of the Holy Spirit)

Acts 1:4-8 NKJV And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; (5) for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (6) Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (7) And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (8) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 2:1-4 NKJV When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. (3) Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

We want to talk about how to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.

This will also help us as believers to learn how to effectively ministry the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

As believers we need to know how to effectively minister the New Birth, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, healing, and any other assignment that we may have.

There are seven things that we need to establish in order to receive or minister the Baptism of the Holy Spirit:

    1. Understand this ministry of the Holy Spirit is a separate experience to being Born Again.

Acts 8:5-8 NKJV Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. (6) And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. (7) For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. (8) And there was great joy in that city.

Acts 8:14-17 NKJV Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, (15) who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. (16) For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (17) Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

    1. We must understand that God has already given the Holy Spirit and now we simply RECEIVE God’s free gift.

Acts 19:1-6 NKJV And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples (2) he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” (3) And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” (4) Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” (5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (6) And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

    1. The only requirement to being able to receive is to be Born Again.

Acts 2:37-38 NKJV Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (38) Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We believe that people that are saved can go to heaven. If they are good enough to go to heaven, then they are good enough to have a little bit of heaven in them here on the earth.

If you could do everything you ought to do and be everything you to be without the Holy Ghost, what would you need Him for? If you can do everything for yourself, why do you need the Holy Spirit?

Baby Christians, carnal Christians, and all Christians can and should be filled with the Holy Spirit. They can receive power that will help them. (Acts 1:8)

    1. You do not need to fear receiving anything other than the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:11-13 NKJV If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? (12) Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? (13) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Notice Jesus’ reference to the serpent and scorpion. Remember He had just said in Luke 10:19 that we have authority over serpents and scorpions.

When you ask to receive the Holy Spirit that is exactly what you will get – the Holy Spirit.

    1. Here is what you can expect to happen when you receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit begins to move in you:
    • First, understand that you receive by faith. You have received whether you feel anything or not.
    • The Holy Spirit will move upon your spirit to give you supernatural words that YOU have to speak out in cooperation with Him.
    • The Holy Spirit gives the utterance but man does the speaking.
    • YOU yield to the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4 NKJV And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:44-46 NKJV While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. (45) And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. (46) For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

Acts 19:6 NKJV And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV (2) For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV (4) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

    1 Corinthians 14:18 NKJV (18) I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

    1. When you pray and receive the Holy Spirit, open your mouth and be ready to use your own mouth and vocal chords.

The Holy Spirit will give you the utterance but you must yield and give voice to that utterance.

    • Anytime you ever speak with other tongues, it will definitely be you doing the talking.
    • The Holy Ghost gives you the utterance supernaturally.
    • He does not take over you or force you to speak.
    • The Holy Ghost does not speak in tongues – YOU DO!
    • You must cooperate and yield to Him.
    • Speaking in tongues is entirely you and it is entirely the Holy Spirit.

Try not to speak in your natural language but give voice and speak out whatever utterance is given by the Holy Spirit no matter what it may sound like to you.

Speak the utterance that you hear by faith and the more that you speak it forth, the more fluent it will become.

John 7:37-39 NKJV On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. (38) He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (39) But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Tongues is the initial evidence that you have been filled with the Holy Spirit and that evidence is mostly for you.

    1. Stay focused and do not get distracted.

If you are praying with someone help them to not get distracted.

Be an encouragement to them by praying in other tongues. This will encourage them to jump on the water.
