    Men’s Huddle – June 24, 2017

Without a definition you are wondering around without clarity!

    Definition of Manhood:
    1. Reject Passivity

Genesis 3:6 NKJV So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Adam was passive in the Garden. Adam was a coward before and after he sinned because he was with Eve when the temptation came and he did nothing about it.

Adam looked like a man but responded like a boy!

Jesus rejected passivity! Jesus took the initiative for the sake of others.

Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, (6) who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, (7) but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

    Got to war against passivity!

    1. Accept responsibility.

Adam failed miserably in three areas of responsibility:

    • He failed at following the will of God.

He disobeyed the commandment and partook of something that was not intended for him.

    • He failed in the work God called him to do which was to keep and protect the garden and his family.
    • He rejected the responsibility of loving the woman God gave him.

Jesus accepted and fulfilled all of His areas of responsibility.

    • Jesus accepted the responsibility for obeying the will of God.

John 4:34 NKJV Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

    • Jesus accepted the responsibility for a work to do.

John 17:4 NKJV I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

    • Jesus accepted responsibility for a woman to love.

Ephesians 5:25 NKJV Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

    1. Lead courageously

Adam failed to lead in the garden.

    • Jesus led by providing direction for others by saying “Follow Me”.

We should be able to tell others to “follow me” like Jesus did with a clear conscience.

    • Jesus led by providing protection for others.

John 10:11 NKJV “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

    • Jesus led by providing life for others.

1 Corinthians 15:45 NKJV (45) And so it is written, “THE FIRST MAN ADAM BECAME A LIVING BEING.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

Jesus was always “others” centered – giving life to others.

    1. Invest eternally.

Adam invested in the temporary, choosing what would satisfy him in the moment.

Jesus was always in the moment but always looking to the eternal, beyond the moment.

Matthew 6:19-20 NKJV “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Eternal things are what really matters!

    Ask yourself these four questions:

    1. Where am I NOT rejecting passivity?
    2. Where am I NOT accepting responsibility?
    3. Where am I NOT leading courageously?
    4. Where am I NOT investing eternally?
  • God’s Plan of Redemption – Part-5 – In Jesus’ Name

Colossians 2:6-7 NKJV (6) As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, (7) rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Three theological terms we need to understand:

    1.  Incarnation – God becoming man through the Lord Jesus

(John 1:1 NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(John 1:14 NKJV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

    1. Substitution – Jesus became our substitute to pay the price of our sin thus taking upon Himself all we had to offer. But in our substitution in the Resurrection, we can receive on us all He has to offer.

(2 Corinthians 5:17-19 NKJV) (17) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (18) Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, (19) that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Very often, Christians do not know what has been bought and paid for and belongs to them.

And, Christians do not use what belongs to them.

(John 8:32 NKJV) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

(Hosea 4:6 BBE) Destruction has overtaken my people because they have no knowledge…

    1. Identification.

We need to not only identify with Jesus death on the Cross for us but also what was accomplished for us in His glorious Resurrection.

One of the many things Christ paid for in His Substitutionary sacrifice and we need to identify with is our authority in Christ.

We want to stir ourselves regarding “The Authority of the Believer.”

(Luke 10:17-20 NKJV) Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” (18) And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (20) Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

In verse 19, the first word translated “authority” is the Greek word “exousia” which means delegated authority.

The second word translated “power” is the Greek word “dunamis” which means ability or capability.

In speaking about serpents and scorpions, Jesus was referring to the power of the devil – demons, evil spirits and all his cohorts.

Does the Church today have or need any less authority than these disciples did in Jesus day? No!

Matter of fact, Jesus was delegating that authority to them as a man anointed by God under the old covenant. How much more do we have since He personally defeated the enemy and made a show of him?

The value of our authority rests on the power behind that authority.

God Himself is the power behind that authority. The devil and his forces are obliged to recognize our authority.

What is authority? Authority is delegated power.

Policemen can direct traffic during the rush hour traffic and hold up their hands and stop cars. Even though they do not have the physical ability to stop cars and trucks, they have the delegated power given to them by the government that they serve. People recognize that authority and stop their cars.

That means that you as a recipient of the delegated authority of Heaven, that is back by God Himself can step out and stop the operations of the devil in your life and he must obey because he recognizes that Power that is backing you.

1 Peter 5:8-9 AMP (8)  Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. (9)  Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset–rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.

1 John 4:4 NKJV (4) You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

1 John 4:4 CEV (4)  Children, you belong to God, and you have defeated these enemies. God’s Spirit is in you and is more powerful than the one that is in the world.

We need to understand fully what Jesus accomplished for us in His work of redemption.

(Matthew 28:18 NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Matthew 28:18 AMP (18)  Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

If we were raised up at the same time the Head was raised up, and all authority was conferred upon the Head, then it was also conferred upon His body which was raised up together with Him.

We need to preach the Cross and have a Cross mindset but we need to balance it with a Throne mindset and understand that we WERE crucified with Him but we were also RAISED together with Him and we are SEATED together with Him in the Heavenlies.

The right hand of God is the center of power of the whole universe.

(Hebrews 1:3 NKJV) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

As long as Satan can keep you in unbelief or hold you in the area of reason, he’ll whip you in every battle. But if you will hold him in the arena of faith and the Spirit, you’ll whip him every time.

He will not argue with you about the Name of Jesus and the authority in that name.

Philippians 2:9-11 NKJV (9) Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, (11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Mr. E. W. Kenyon wrote in his book, “The Wonderful Name of Jesus” about ministering one night on the Name of Jesus, and in the middle of his message an attorney interrupted him and asked the question, “Do you mean that Jesus has given us the power of attorney?”

Mr. Kenyon responded to him that he was the lawyer and expert and did Jesus give us the power of attorney?

The man responded and said if language means anything, Jesus gave to the Church the power of attorney.

Mr. Kenyon asked him, “What is the value of the power of attorney?”

The lawyer responded, “It all depends on how much there is in back of it. How much authority and power that this Name represents.”

All the power and authority that Jesus has and had is invested in His Name.

Do we have power of attorney to use His Name?

Jesus said we could use His Name in prayer, in dealing with demons, and in laying hands on the sick.

Sometimes we focus too much on our part in ministering to someone, but we must realize that it is the power in His Name that does the work.

Kenyon states, “The measure of His ability is the measure of the value of that Name, and all that is invested in that Name belongs to us for Jesus gave us the unqualified use of that Name.”

    The Source of Our Authority

The source of our authority is found in this resurrection and exalting of Christ by God.

(Hebrews 1:1-6 NKJV) God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (3) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (4) having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (5) For to which of the angels did He ever say: “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU”? And again: “I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON”? (6) But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.”

(Colossians 1:18 NKJV) And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

(Romans 8:29 NKJV) For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin, The Authority of the Believer:

“When we realize that the authority that belongs to Christ also belongs to individual members of the Body of Christ and is available to us, our lives will be revolutionized.”

“The right-hand throne of God is the center of power of the whole universe! Exercising the power of the throne was committed to the resurrected Lord.”

(Romans 5:17 AMP) For if because of one man’s trespass (lapse, offense) death reigned through that one, much more surely will those who receive [God’s] overflowing grace (unmerited favor) and the free gift of righteousness [putting them into right standing with Himself] reign as kings in life through the one Man Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Take authority over the devil and break his power in the lives of your unsaved loved-ones.

(2 Corinthians 4:4 AMP) For the god of this world has blinded the unbelievers’ minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (the Messiah), Who is the Image and Likeness of God.

Don’t pray for God to save them; Jesus has already done the work.

Pray for laborers to cross their paths with the truth of the Gospel and the Word of God.

(Matthew 9:35-38 NKJV) Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. (36) But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. (37) Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. (38) Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

You are not going to be able to totally understand this authority in Jesus’ Name with your mind. You are going to have to receive it and walk in it by faith.

(John 14:12-14 NKJV) “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. (13) And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (14) If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Ask (Greek “aiteo”) demand, this is in reference to what already belongs to you in Christ.

(The Father is not mentioned here in the sense of prayer being made to the Father.)

(Acts 3:1-10 NKJV) Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. (2) And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; (3) who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. (4) And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” (5) So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. (6) Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (7) And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. (8) So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them–walking, leaping, and praising God. (9) And all the people saw him walking and praising God. (10) Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

(John 16:23-24 NKJV) “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. (24) Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Here Jesus is teaching about Prayer to the Father in His Name. That is when we make requests know to Him.

Faith is involved in spiritual authority. There are times when the devil will move immediately and there are times when he tries to “show off” one more time. If this is the case do not get disturbed about it.

Some people’s faith is based on the manifestation and it can’t be. When circumstances don’t change immediately, don’t get discouraged and slip into doubt and unbelief.

As Smith Wigglesworth often said, “I am not moved by what I see, I’m not moved by what I feel. I’m moved only by what I believe.” So stand your ground!

Jesus has done all He’s going to do about the devil and his forces until the angel comes down from heaven, takes the chain and binds him and puts him into the bottomless pit. (Rev. 20:1-3)

(1 Peter 5:8-9 ASV) Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour, (9) whom withstand stedfast in your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are accomplished in your brethren who are in the world.

  • God’s Plan of Redemption – Part-4 – And You…

Colossians 2:6-7 NKJV (6) As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, (7) rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Remember, the Law of sin and death was released into Creation because of Adam’s sin.

(Romans 8:1-2 NKJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

We need to learn what is really normal and what is not normal for the child of God.

We have seen that in the beginning, man was created for joy and peace; and that sin, sickness, sorrow or death had no place in God’s original plan. These present conditions of society and the world are not normal (according to God’s plan).

God has vindicated Himself and stands acquitted before the human race because He did not leave man in this condition, but provided a Redemption which man could enjoy through faith in Jesus Christ, that would answer man’s every need.

Three theological terms we need to understand:

Incarnation – God becoming man through the Lord Jesus

(John 1:1 NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(John 1:14 NKJV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

I read a story about a man who was found dead in the small, shabby apartment that he rented for $3 a week. He had been a familiar sight on the streets of Chicago for about 20 years, always dressed in rags and easting out of garbage cans. When he wasn’t seen for two or three days, concerned neighbors went to look for him and found him dead in bed. An autopsy revealed that he had died of malnutrition, yet a money belt was found around his waist that contained more than $23,000. The man had lived in abject poverty, peddling newspapers for a living, yet he had money. He could have lived in the finest hotel in town but instead lived in the little, run-down room. He could have eaten the best food but yet he died of malnutrition.

This man did not use what belonged to him.

I believe that this story can summarize where a lot of believers are in that they either do not know what Jesus has already bought and paid for them and they already possess, or they know what they have or have some idea and do not use what belongs to them.

(John 8:32 NKJV) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

(Hosea 4:6 NKJV) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

(Hosea 4:6 BBE) Destruction has overtaken my people because they have no knowledge…

There is a third theological word we need to learn and that is Identification.

We need to not only identify with Jesus death on the Cross for us but also what was accomplished for us in His glorious Resurrection.

(Ephesians 1:15-23 NKJV) Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, (16) do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: (17) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, (18) the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (19) and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (20) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

(Ephesians 2:1-7 NKJV) And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, (2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (3) among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. (4) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, (5) even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), (6) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (7) that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

(Colossians 2:6-15 NKJV) As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, (7) rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. (8) Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. (9) For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; (10) and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. (11) In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, (12) buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (13) And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, (14) having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. (15) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

(Colossians 2:8 MSG) Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ.

One of the many things Christ paid for in His Substitutionary sacrifice is our authority.

In verse 19, the first word translated “authority” is the Greek word “exousia” which means delegated authority and the second word translated “power” is the Greek word “dunamis” which means ability or capability.

1 John 4:4 CEV(4)  Children, you belong to God, and you have defeated these enemies.

Mr. E. W. Kenyon wrote in his book, “The Wonderful Name of Jesus” about ministering one night on the Name of Jesus, and in the middle of his message an attorney interrupted him and asked the question, “Do you mean that Jesus has given us the power of attorney?”

All the power and authority that Jesus has and had is invested in His Name.

Do we have power of attorney to use His Name?

Kenyon states, “The measure of His ability is the measure of the value of that Name, and all that is invested in that Name belongs to us for Jesus gave us the unqualified use of that Name.”

Jesus not only gives us the use of His Name in prayer but says that the prayers we pray in His Name will receive the special attention of the Father.

Jesus was saying that if you ask of the Father in My Name – I will endorse it – and the Father will give it to you.

  • Galatians – Part 4

    Now Are We Sons

All of our Christian life is based on one thing: relationship.

(Galatians 3:26 NKJV) For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

(Galatians 4:4-7 NIV)  But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,  (5)  to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.  (6)  Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”  (7)  So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

    • The slave has a master.

    The son has a father.

(Romans 8:15-16 NIV)  The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”  (16)  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

    • The slave is driven by duty.

The son is driven by devotion.

(Philippians 2:12-13 NLT)  (12) …Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.  (13)  For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

(Romans 12:11 GNB)  Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion.

    • The slave is an employee.

    The son is an heir.

(Romans 8:17 NIV)  Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.

How Do I Live as a Co-heir with Jesus?

    1. Know how much God loves you!

(John 17:20 NLT) “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in Me through their message.

(John 17:23 NLT) I am in them and You are in Me. May they …know that You sent Me and that You love them as much as You love Me.

    1. Know what you have in Him.

(John 16:14-15 NLT)  He will bring Me glory by telling you whatever He receives from Me.  (15)  All that belongs to the Father is Mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever He receives from Me.’

(Ephesians 1:3 NKJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

(2 Peter 1:3-5 NLT)  By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence.  (4)  And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.  (5)  In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises.

    1. Know why He gave it to you.

(1 Timothy 6:17-18 AMP)  As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be proud and arrogant and contemptuous of others, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, Who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for [our] enjoyment.  (18)  [Charge them] to do good, to be rich in good works, to be liberal and generous of heart, ready to share [with others],

(2 Corinthians 5:20 AMP)  So we are Christ’s ambassadors, God making His appeal as it were through us. We [as Christ’s personal representatives] beg you for His sake to lay hold of the divine favor [now offered you] and be reconciled to God.

  • It Is Written – Part 4

IT IS WRITTEN – Part 4

(John 8:31-32 NIV) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

    Holding On to God’s Word

    1. Make it the foundation of my life.

(Matthew 7:24 NIV) “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

    • Popular culture.

(Exodus 23:2 NIV) “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.”

    • Tradition.

(Mark 7:8 NIV) You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

    • Reason.

(Proverbs 16:25 NIrV) There is a way that may seem right to a man. But in the end it leads to death.

(Judges 21:25 MSG) At that time there was no king in Israel. People did whatever they felt like doing.

    1. Make it the first part of my daily life.

(Matthew 6:33 NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

    First 15

    • 5 minutes in the Word.

(Psalms 119:105 NIV) Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

    • 5 minutes in Worship.

(Psalms 34:1 NIV) I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.

    • 5 minutes in Prayer.

(Philippians 4:6-7 NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    1. Make it grow deeper in my life.

(Colossians 3:16 NIV) Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly…

    • Get a translation I like and understand.
    • Get a study Bible.
    • Get in a small group.
    1. Make it a weapon for the challenges of life.

(Ephesians 6:13, 17 NIV) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground… Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

(Ephesians 6:17 MSG) …God’s Word is an indispensable weapon.

(Matthew 4:3-4 NIV) The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”  Jesus answered, “It is written…”

    • Scripture memory.

(Psalms 119:9-11 NIV) How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

  • It Is Written – Part 2

Part 2 – Understanding the Bible

(John 1:1 NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(Matthew 7:24-25 NIV) “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

    Understanding the Bible

The more you understand something, you love it more. The same is true with the Word of God.

    • The word “Bible” means Book.
    • It was written over a period of 1600 years in over a dozen countries on three continents by people from all walks of life (in three languages)

Poets, prophets, princes, kings, sailors, soldiers, attorneys, doctors, farmers, scholars, shepherds, priests, historians, fishermen, tax collectors, and businessmen.

Caves, ships, homes, palaces, prisons, and deserts.

How did they come up with the same story?

    • There were about 40 writers but only one Author.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Bible is not in chronological order. It is grouped by the type of book.

    The Subject – Jesus

(John 5:39 NLT) “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to Me!

    The Verb – Give

(John 3:16 NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

(1 John 3:16 CEV) We know what love is because Jesus gave his life for us. That’s why we must give our lives for each other.

  • It Is Written – Part 1

    Part 1 – A Life Built on God’s Word

(John 1:1-3 NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

(John 1:14a NIV) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…

    The Bible Is Alive

(John 6:63b NKJV) …The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

(Hebrews 4:12 NIV) For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

    • Faith activates the Word.

(Hebrews 4:2 NIrV) The good news was preached to our people long ago. It has also been preached to us. The message they heard didn’t have any value for them. They didn’t combine it with faith.

    • Revelation activates faith.

(Luke 1:34-38 NIV) “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God… For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

    • Meditation activates revelation.

(Joshua 1:8 NIV) Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

A Life Built on God’s Word

(Matthew 7:24 MSG) “These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock.

    1. I must accept its authority.

(1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV) And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

    1. I must assimilate its truths.
    • By listening to God’s Word.

(Romans 10:17 NKJV) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

(Luke 8:18 NIV) “Therefore consider carefully how you listen…”

    • By reading God’s Word.

(Matthew 4:4 NIV) Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

    • Get a Bible you understand.
    • Make an appointment to read your Bible.
    • Have a reading plan.
    • Don’t just read the Bible, let the Bible read you.
    • By exploring God’s Word.

(Psalms 119:11 NIV) I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

    1. I must apply its principles.

(James 1:22 NIV) Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

  • The Cave of Adullam – Part 2

    (Review of last week’s material)

    •  When you are out of the will of God, you make very bad (dumb) decisions.
    •  Understand that your sin never affects just you. It affects those around you too.
    • When you aren’t listening to the Spirit of God, or following God’s Word, you are listening to your flesh or emotions.

In the cave of Adullam, it was God and David period.

These are the Psalms David wrote while he was in the Cave of Adullam:

(Psalms 142:1-7 NLT)  A psalm of David, regarding his experience in the cave. A prayer. I cry out to the LORD; I plead for the LORD’s mercy.  (2)  I pour out my complaints before Him and tell Him all my troubles.  (3)  When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Wherever I go, my enemies have set traps for me.  (4)  I look for someone to come and help me, but no one gives me a passing thought! No one will help me; no one cares a bit what happens to me.  (5)  Then I pray to You, O LORD. I say, “You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life.  (6)  Hear my cry, for I am very low. Rescue me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.  (7)  Bring me out of prison so I can thank You. The godly will crowd around me, for You are good to me.”

(Psalms 57:1-11 NLT)  For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time he fled from Saul and went into the cave. To be sung to the tune “Do Not Destroy!” Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to You for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of Your wings until the danger passes by.  (2)  I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill His purpose for me.  (3)  He will send help from heaven to rescue me, disgracing those who hound me. Interlude My God will send forth His unfailing love and faithfulness.  (4)  I am surrounded by fierce lions who greedily devour human prey–whose teeth pierce like spears and arrows, and whose tongues cut like swords.  (5)  Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens! May Your glory shine over all the earth.  (6)  My enemies have set a trap for me. I am weary from distress. They have dug a deep pit in my path, but they themselves have fallen into it. Interlude  (7)  My heart is confident in You, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing Your praises!  (8)  Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song.  (9)  I will thank You, Lord, among all the people. I will sing Your praises among the nations.  (10)  For Your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.  (11)  Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May Your glory shine over all the earth.

In the Cave of Adullam, David did the following:

    • He turned loose of his own strength
    • He turned loose of his own ideas
    • He turned loose of his own wisdom
    • He abandoned himself completely to the will of God

The Cave of Adullam is where David quit and God took over.

The Cave of Adullam is the line where David’s life being David’s responsibility and became God’s responsibility. It is where he came to the end of himself.

This is the place in our lives where we quit trying to make God’s plans and promises come to pass and we surrender and let God bring to pass His own plans.

David repents and God is able to begin a work of restoration in David’s life:

(1 Samuel 22:1 NIV)  David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.

    • Notice that the first thing that God restored back to David was his family relationships.
    • David tells the Lord that he does not have an army and God brings to him 400 messed up miss-fits.

(1 Samuel 22:2 NIV)  All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

    • God then began to bless David materially as David and that small army began to conquer other armies and spoiled them.
    • David had a great capacity to not only confess his guilt in the things that he caused, confess his sins before the Lord, but he also had a great capacity to forgive himself and go on.

(1 Samuel 22:20-23 NIV)  But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to join David.  (21)  He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.  (22)  Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family.  (23)  Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

Look at another incident that David caused:

     (2 Samuel 12:19-24 NIV)  David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”  (20)  Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.  (21)  His attendants asked him, “Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”  (22)  He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.’  (23)  But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”  (24)  Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD loved him;

If this was you could you receive your forgiveness and then forgive yourself and move forward if you were guilty of these things?

It doesn’t matter how big your mistakes are, the forgiving and restoring power of God is always greater!

When you get to the cave of Adullam and you quit and give up to God, that will begin the turn-around in your life.

    • Moses had his Cave of Adullam experience after he killed the Egyptian and spent 40 years in the wilderness and when he surrendered is when God could use him to become the leader He wanted Him to be.
    • The woman with the issue of blood had been to many physicians and spent all that she had and rather grew worse BUT when she had heard of Jesus she came to Him and was healed.
    • Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus came to himself when the Lord confronted him.

(Acts 9:5-6 NIV)  “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.  (6)  “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Turn loose of yourself and let God bring it to pass.

(Philippians 1:6 NIV)  being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

The thing that David did right this time was to wait on God and let God make the ruler over all the nation of Israel.

(Luke 1:31-33 NIV)  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.  (32)  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,  (33)  and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

God even brought Jesus into the earth through the lineage of this great king and as the scripture says, Jesus will one day rule from the throne of His father David. Notice it does not just say that God will give the throne of Israel but He will give Him David’s throne.

    • God will restore relationships, restore your strength, and God will begin to bless and increase you like never before.
    • He will take those failures and mistakes and turn them around and cause your ending to be so much better than your beginning!
  • Fresh Air – Part 4

(Deuteronomy 30:19 NIV)  This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life.

    AS THE WIND BLOWS

Ruwach – a wind, breath, a violent exhalation, blast of breath.

(Genesis 1:2 NIV)  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Pneuma – a current of air, blast of breath, a strong breeze.

(John 6:63 NIV) The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you–they are full of the Spirit and life.

    • Wind is unseen.

(John 20:29 NIV)  Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

    • Wind is unpredictable.

(John 3:8 NIV)  Jesus answered…“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

    • Wind is powerful.

(Acts 1:5-8 NIV)  “For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”  He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”

    BREATH OF HEAVEN

(Romans 8:11 NLT)  The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

    1. Let go of fears and misperceptions.

(Psalm 34:4 NIV)  I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

    • The Holy Spirit is not weird.
    • The Holy Spirit is a perfect gentleman.
    • The Holy Spirit ALWAYS points to Jesus and not men.
    • The Holy Spirit will never desire something different than God.
    1. Go all in.

(Jeremiah 29:13 NIV)  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

    1. Develop an intimate friendship with Him.

(2 Corinthians 13:14 MSG)  The amazing grace of the Master, Jesus Christ, the extravagant love of God, the intimate friendship of the Holy Spirit, be with all of you.

(Isaiah 30:21 NIV)  Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

    FRESH AIR PRINCIPLE #4

(Ephesians 4:30 MSG)  Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

Get to know the person of the Holy Spirit.

  • Running With The Giants – Part 4

RUNNING WITH THE GIANTS                                            Part 4 – Joseph

(Hebrews 12:1 NIV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

When life isn’t turning out the way you had planned…

“Don’t give up on your dreams.”

(Genesis 37:5-7, 19-20 NIV) Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS…

    1. Even if you didn’t start off well.

(1 Timothy 1:12-13 NIV) I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.

    1. Even if those closest don’t support you.

(Mark 6:3-4 NIV) Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

    1. Even if your journey is full of surprises.

(Romans 8:28 NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

    1. Even if it takes a long time to realize it.

(Habakkuk 2: 3 LB) “These things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!”

    FINAL WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

    • God is always with you.

(Hebrews 13:5-6 AMP)  “…for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me?

    • Trust God to develop you during the down times.

(James 1:2-4 NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

    • Realize that self-promotion can never replace divine promotion.

What you gain by self-promotion, you must maintain. What you gain by divine promotion, God will maintain.

    • When the dream is realized, it is sweeter than you can ever imagine.

(Genesis 50:20 NIV) You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
