Free Indeed – Part 2

(John 8:31-36 NIV) To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (32) Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (33) They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” (34) Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. (35) Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. (36) So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

(Galatians 5:17 ESV) For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

Under the Influence

(Romans 7:15 ESV) For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

  • It becomes a part of your identity.
  • You feel increasingly hopeless.
  • You become defensive.
  • You become a slave to it.
  • You begin to lose your life.

We need to have different truths in our heads and hearts so that we can be free.

If you do not believe that something exists then you will not resist or fight it.

The thief does not want you to know that he is stealing from you.

  1. There really are demons.

(1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV) Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (9) Resist him, standing firm in the faith

  1. We can be under their influence.

(Ephesians 4:26-27 NLT) And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, (27) for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

  1. They have to flee in Jesus’ Name.

(Luke 10:17-20 NIV) The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” (18) He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (20) However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

(Romans 8:37-39 NIV) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (38) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, (39) neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Truth Will Set You Free

(2 Corinthians 10:3-4 NIV) (3) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. (4) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

In the Greek, the word stronghold means:

  • A Prisoner locked by deception.
  • Living by something that is not true.

The only weapon that the enemy can use against us is deception.

(John 8:44 NIV) …When he (the devil) lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

(2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

(Romans 12:2a NIV) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

(Ephesians 4:22-23 NIV) You were taught… to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; (23) to be made new in the attitude of your minds;

We defeat the enemy by replacing every lie he has told us with the truth of God’s Word.

  1. God loves me and is on my side.

(John 3:16-17 MSG) “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. (17) God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.

(Romans 8:31 MSG) So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose?

  1. I can be free.

(Romans 8:1-2 MSG) …Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. (2) A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death.

  1. I can be restored.

(Job 33:26 NIV) …then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
