  • Love Where You Live – Part 4

    Part 4

Matthew 22:34-40 NLT But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees with His reply, they met together to question Him again. (35) One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap Him with this question: (36) “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” (37) Jesus replied, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ (38) This is the first and greatest commandment. (39) A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (40) The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Neighbor: (Greek: plesion) anyone of the human family that happens to be close by.

Philippians 2:15 MSG (15)  Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night

    Become More Attractive

    • We can always be more authentic in our walk with the Lord.

Authentic – Genuine, real, not false or fake.

    • We can always be more compassionate in our love for others.

Compassion – a feeling of sympathy or sorrow for someone who is suffering from misfortune accompanied by a strong desire to do something about it.

    • One of the most effective ways to increase your potential in reaching people is to learn to sacrifice for others.

Sacrifice –  the surrender or destruction of something that is prized or desirable for the sake of something considered to be more valuable.

    • Sacrifice motivated by love is extremely difficult to ignore and discount.
    • Sacrifice moves people.
    • Sacrifice melts people.
    • Sacrificial acts are rarely forgotten.

    Maximize Your Neighboring Potential

    1. Maximize the Moment

Luke 19:1-10 NIV Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. (2) A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. (3) He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. (4) So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. (5) When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” (6) So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. (7) All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” (8) But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” (9) Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. (10) For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

    1. Reinvest Your Resources

1 John 3:18 MSG (18)  My dear children, let’s not just talk about love; let’s practice real love.

    1. Modeling for The Long Haul

66% of Millennials perceive churchgoers to be hypocritical. (Barna Research)

Romans 12:1 MSG  So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life–and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.

Although our actions have nothing to do with gaining our own salvation, they might be used by God to save somebody else.

2 Corinthians 3:3 NLT (3)  Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This “letter” is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

  • Love Where You Live – Part 3

    Part 3

We need to look at people differently to help us identify and empathize with where they are in life.

The sheep represents people who are preoccupied with life.

The coin represents people who have been mishandled and neglected in life. One generation was careless with the generation that came after them.

The son represents people who just miscalculated.

We shouldn’t be afraid of, ignore, or criticize people that fall in any these categories.

We need to understand how people become preoccupied, careless, and miscalculated but more importantly we need to seek them out and show them Jesus.

God is obsessed with people so Christians should be sociologist.

If there are ppl out there that don’t recognize Jesus and they aren’t living their lives for Him then we (The Church) need to find out why.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world…

We need to so love the world too…by sowing love in the world.

You will not be effective in a world that you don’t love but we are also ineffective if we are too much “of the world” that we live in.

The Bible says that we are in the world but not of it but too often the Church has become of the world but not in it.

    Matthew 5:13-14

We should not be absorbed by the world but we should absorb the world with the light of Christ.

If we try to use salt where it’s not needed it’s unpalatable.

No matter your background, education, or spiritual maturity we all have the ability to love people.

Romans 5:5 NKJV “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

The benefits of being a Christian is not for you to just hoard up and keep it to yourself.

The Question: What are we passionate about?

Some people define their Christianity by what they don’t do bc they don’t know what they should be doing.

The Christian life is not about you hiding and being scared to live so you won’t sin.

In order to reach the ppl we have to be intentional.

Matthew 4:19 NKJV “Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

We need to understand that not reaching the ppl, is not any option.

Matthew 28:19-20 MSG “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

Witnessing is not a gifting or a calling. It is an instruction.

We are the GPS system to reroute people to Jesus.

We need to live our normal lives on purpose to engage the world around you to bring change and transformation.

We would be amazed at how things in our personal lives would all work out when we get on mission

If we get on with what we are supposed to be doing we won’t have time for what we shouldn’t be doing.

  • Love Where You Live – Part 2

    Part 2

God has created us to be reward motivated.

Hebrews 11:6 NLT And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.

Whatever the goal is that we are endeavoring to accomplish in our lives, our plans may be good, purpose may be good, but something can seem to hold us back and keep us from following through with what we need to do.

Often what is lacking is a clear and concise look at the real costs and rewards of what we are looking to do.

Without this, the plan can sound good but lack the drive and motivation required to move you to action.

For instance, in preparing for retirement, you must be convinced that having funds laid aside for later is worth the effort and expense.

Luke 14:28 NLT “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?

    The Costs of Neighboring:

1 Corinthians 10:33 NLT (33) I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.

    • Time and Energy
    • Reading and Study

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

    • Money

Galatians 6:7 NIV Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Galatians 6:9 NIV Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

    • Risk of Embarrassment, Rejection, or Persecution

Matthew 5:11-12 NLT “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are My followers. (12) Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

    • It complicates Your Life

So does getting married, having children, and buying a house but there is not one spouse, one parent that would say that they complication that these things bring to one’s life are not worth the price.

Neighboring can be messy because people in need of Jesus don’t have it all together and their lives are often really messed up.

In other words, we may have to get a little dirty when we deal with people. (dirty poopy diaper)

    The Rewards of Neighboring:

    • Adventure

Being the kind of neighbor Jesus was us to be to others can give your relationship with Him and exciting sense of the unexpected.

God loves to stretch us beyond our comfort zones and stepping out by faith and send us out on search and rescue missions.

There is something exhilarating when you sense that God is using you to impact the life of someone else.

    • Purpose

When you begin to experience more and more of the adventures God can create out of everyday situations, you’ll find yourself facing daily life with a new sense of purpose.

You start looking for God to surprise you at any time with an eternity-altering opportunity.

You’ll also begin to see how God can take a difficult situation or circumstance and put purpose to it by giving you an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with someone.

    • Fulfillment

As you begin to allow God to use you in rescuing people from an eternity separate from Him, it creates a sense of fulfillment that goes way beyond normal daily living.

What else can compare to being an instrument that God is using to love people He cared enough to die for?

John 4:30-35 NIV They came out of the town and made their way toward him. (31) Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” (32) But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” (33) Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” (34) “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. (35) Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

Jesus Himself experienced this sense of fulfillment when He ministered to the Samaritan woman.

He was saying in essence, “I just played a part in fulfilling God’s plan of reaching this lost world – and I eat this stuff up!”

    • Spiritual Growth

Your personal relationship with God will become re-ignited once again when you encounter those that are seeking for God. All of these begin to flourish:

    • Bible Reading
    • Prayer
    • Worship
    • Personal Purity
    • Church Attendance
    • Spiritual Confidence

People who do not believe the way that you do will challenge you to take steps to ensure that you know what you are talking about in regards to basic spiritual truths. But when you see God move in someone’s life it will produce boldness.

Acts 4:31 MSG (31)  While they were praying, the place where they were meeting trembled and shook. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak God’s Word with fearless confidence.

    • Enduring Investments

The reality is that all of the things of this world will one day be burned up so what are you investing in that will last throughout eternity?

2 Peter 3:10-13 NLT But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. (11) Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, (12) looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, He will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. (13) But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth He has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.

1 Corinthians 15:45 NLT (45) The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam–that is, Christ–is a life-giving Spirit.

    • The Honor of Being God’s Agent

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 NLT (20) So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” (21) For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

  • Love Where You Live – Part 1

    Part 1

Matthew 22:34-40 NKJV But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. (35) Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, (36) “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” (37) Jesus said to him, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ (38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like it: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ (40) On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

When God was creating all of the universe, paying attention to every detail, He would stop and admire His work and say that, “It was good.”

In Hebrew, the word translated “good” means: pleasing to the senses, is useful and profitable, is abundant and plentiful, and is kind and giving.

Genesis 1:4 NKJV  And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:12 NKJV  And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:18 NKJV  and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:21 NKJV  So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:25 NKJV  And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  (27)  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:31 NKJV  Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very (exceedingly) good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

That is because He had only one purpose in mind and that was it was all for man and to meet his needs.

    • Raise or lower the universe’s rate of expansion by even one part in a million, and it would have ruled out the possibility of life.
    • If the average distance between stars were any greater, planets like the earth would not have been formed; any smaller, the planetary orbits necessary for life would not have occurred.
    • If the ratio of carbon to oxygen had been slightly different than what it is, none of us would be able to breathe the air and survive.
    • Change the tilt earth’s axis just a few degrees in one direction and we would freeze. Change it the other direction, and we’d burn up.
    • Suppose the earth had been a bit closer or further from the sun, or just a little larger or smaller, or if it rotated at a speed any different from the one we are spinning at right now. Given any of these changes, the resulting temperature variations would be completely fatal to humans.

Someone must have gone to a lot of effort to make things just right so that you and I could be here to enjoy life.

In short, modern science points to the fact that He did all that He did because we really matter to God!

Luke 15:1-32 NKJV  Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him.  (2)  And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

Luke 15:1-2 MSG  By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Jesus, listening intently.  (2)  The Pharisees and religion scholars were not pleased, not at all pleased. They growled, “He takes in sinners and eats meals with them, treating them like old friends.”

Luke 15:3–24 NKJV So He spoke this parable to them, saying:  (4)  “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?  (5)  And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.  (6)  And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’  (7)  I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.  (8)  “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?  (9)  And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’  (10)  Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”  (11)  Then He said: “A certain man had two sons.  (12)  And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.‘ So he divided to them his livelihood.  (13)  And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.  (14)  But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.  (15)  Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.  (16)  And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.  (17)  “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!  (18)  I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,  (19)  and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ‘  (20)  “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.  (21)  And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’  (22)  “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.  (23)  And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry;  (24)  for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.

This is the only instance in the Gospels where Jesus told three parables about the same thing in a row.

Three common threads that run through these stories:

    1. There was something of great value was missing, something that really mattered.
    • The missing sheep was important to the shepherd because it represented a portion of his livelihood.
    • The lost coin was vital to the woman’s survival. Perhaps she was a widow and the coin represented a large part of her entire financial well being.
    • The son mattered greatly to the father.

In short, what Jesus was saying in these three simple stories was that these people: the lost, the wanderers, the spiritually confused and selfish actually have value to the Heavenly Father!

God’s love is so great that it can look beyond sins and treasure the wayward people behind them. God’s love says, “Even though you’re way off track, you still matter to Me! You really do!”

When you and I begin to look at others with the attitude that they really matter to God it will revolutionize the way that we treat people.

You have never locked eyes with another human being who isn’t valuable to God.

You will love in awe of the scope and depth and breadth of God’s love and you’ll treat people differently.

You might say, “All right. People matter to God, but how much?”

    1. That which was missing was important enough to warrant an all-out search.

The sheep got lost and shepherd went out looking for it until he found it.

The coin was missing and the woman turned her house upside down until she located it.

In the story of the wayward son, the father exercised restraint and let the son use his free choice and make some bad decisions but his eyes kept scanning the horizon looking for the day when his son would return home.

When you really value something, and it winds up lost, you just naturally want to search for it.

Luke 19:10 CEV  The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.”

    1. When that which matters and was lot is found, the retrieval results in great celebration.
    • The shepherd retrieved his lost sheep and threw a party.
    • The woman found the lost coin and threw another party.
    • The wayward son came home and the father threw the biggest party of all.

Luke 15:10 NKJV  Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15:10 MSG  Count on it–that’s the kind of party God’s angels throw every time one lost soul turns to God.”

Whether last week or forty years ago, when you gave your heart to Jesus, all of heaven erupted in a magnificent cosmic celebration where your name was written on the banner that hung up.

If that brought joy to your heart knowing that kind of celebration occurred on your behalf, just imagine what kind of joy will take place in your heart when you are a primary player in the process.

There is nothing like the adventure of being used by God to contagiously spread His love, truth and life to others – the people that matter so much to Him.

That is how much people matter to God. If people matter so much to God, then they should matter to us too.
