  • Breakthrough – 2020 – Part 4

What are you believing for yourself and your family for 2020?

Seven Areas of Breakthrough This Year:

    1. Faith – your personal walk with God
    2. Family – marriage, relationships with children
    3. Finances – managing our money, etc.
    4. Freedom – areas of our lives that we have strongholds
    5. Fun – we need to enjoy life (Satan did not create fun, he just perverted it.)
    6. Field of endeavor (job or vocation)
    7. Friendships (social relationships)
    • Marriage is a covenant and not a contract.
    • Contract Defined: A contract is an agreement between two parties and is designed to protect your rights and to limit your responsibilities.

That is the reason that we enter into a contract.

    • In a covenant, we give up our rights and we pick up our responsibilities.

Every person in the Bible who entered into a covenant knew that they were giving up rights and picking up responsibilities. This is the opposite of a contract.

In our society today, there is a contract spirit that people are entering into marriage with and it is leading to divorce. It will not work.

    • You cannot enter into marriage limiting your responsibilities and protecting your rights.
    • The only way that you can enter into marriage is to give up your rights and pick up your responsibilities.

How do we know that this is the only way that it works? Because this is the only way that Christianity works. The reason we have so many unhappy, defeated Christians today is because they entered into salvation trying to protect their rights and limiting their responsibilities.

They try to enter into a contract with God and not a covenant. You cannot enter into a relationship with God that way.

    • God did not enter into a relationship with us in a contract, He entered into a relationship with us in a covenant.

When Jesus came into the earth to redeem us, He gave up all of His rights and assumed all of our responsibilities.

Therefore we enter into a relationship with Him in the same way.

Which spirit would you rather have in your marriage? The contract spirit or the covenant spirit?

You must be willing to lay down your rights and pick up your responsibilities in your marriage if it is going to work.

We are going to talk about today about the three rights that we have to lay down if you want a Godly marriage:

Genesis 2:21-25 | NKJV  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.  (22)  Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.  (23)  And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”  (24)  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.  (25)  And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Marriage was in the world before sin was in the world.

God did not form Eve the same way that He made Adam. He took Eve from Adam’s side.

The word “covenant” actually means “to cut.” God cut Adam and took Eve out of his side so that marriage could be based on a covenant and 4000 years later God cut His Son and took His Bride out of His side so that our relationship with God would be based on a covenant.

These are the rights that we have to give up:

    1. The right of priority.

Genesis 2:24 | NKJV Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

God did not say this for Adam and Eve’s benefit. How do we know that? Adam and Eve had no father and mother. God was speaking to us when He said this.

This says, “I give you the right to be the first priority in my life and promise to protect that place against anything that YOU perceive as competition.”

In the spiritual, God is always your number one priority. In the natural, if you are married, your spouse is your number one priority.

Every other person, every other hobby, and every other activity now becomes secondary in priority to your spouse.

Incidentally, if you do not have your spouse as number one and you are not treating them with honor, respect and service then God is not number one in your life.

A way to tell if your spouse is truly first, is that she will begin to tell you to go and do the things that you enjoy doing rather than you doing them and leaving her out.

It is Heaven on earth when your spouse is your first priority. You know how I know that? Because your relationship with God is Heaven on earth when God is your first priority spiritually.

    1. The right of ownership or possession.

I give you the right to co-own and administrate everything I own in my life.

This verse says, “The two shall become one flesh…” You must substitute the word “mine” for “ours.” Nothing is yours anymore. Even in a blended family, they are not your kids and my kids, they are our kids.

Money is a huge area that this needs to take place.

1 Corinthians 7:4 | TPT  Neither the husband nor the wife have exclusive rights to their own bodies, but those rights are to be surrendered to the other.

Some of you who are married got excited about this verse. This verse does not just mean in a sexual sense either.

You know what this also means? Pick up the vacuum cleaner. Take out the trash, etc.

      • Selfish people cannot have a successful marriage just like selfish people cannot be successful Christians.
    1. The right to privacy.

This says, “I give you free and unhindered access to every part of my life. I give you the right to complain and to confront me in any issue without fear of retaliation.”

Genesis 2:25 | NKJV And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Shame comes from hiding. Before sin they had no shame but after sin, they became ashamed.

When you become a believer you cannot hide from God anymore and when you get married you cannot hide from your spouse anymore.

Every part of you is open. Your spouse has the right to bring anything to you.

Your spouse has to have free access to every part of you, your heart and your emotions.

Men, you must be willing to share everything with your spouse including your emotions.

Ladies, do not clam up to your husbands and then share everything with your friends.

If you have a problem with your spouse do not take it out of the relationship to discuss it; take it to your spouse. This is basic Christianity.

Matthew 18:15 | NKJV “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

If you are here and your marriage today looks more like a contract than a covenant what can you do?

God came to a man named Abraham and told Him that He wanted a covenant with him and wanted to give up His rights and pick up Abraham’s responsibilities and then wanted to bless him in all of that.

400 years later, Abraham’s descendants decided that they did not want a covenant with God and rebelled against the covenant; they wanted a contract. God said, “Fine” and gave them the law to show them they could not keep the contract.

God then sent Jesus in the spirit of covenant by grace so that He could fulfill the contract for us.

    • You bring the spirit of covenant into the marriage and it will always overcome the spirit of contract. Grace always overcomes the law.
  • Breakthrough – 2020 – Part 3

What are you believing for yourself and your family for 2020?

Seven Areas of Breakthrough This Year:

    1. Faith – your personal walk with God
    2. Family – marriage, with children
    3. Finances – managing our money, etc.
    4. Freedom – areas of our lives that we have strongholds
    5. Fun – we need to enjoy life (Satan did not create fun, he just perverted it.)
    6. Field of endeavor (job or vocation)
    7. Friendships (social relationships)

A Breakthrough will come for you as hear and obey the voice of God!

You don’t need to have a burning bush experience to hear from God.

We are going to talk about four basic ways to hear from God:

    1. His Word

God reveals Himself to us through His Word.

God wrote His own autobiography. If you want to know Him it is in His book.

Hearing from God is not a formula; it is about a relationship.

The Bible tells us how He walks, how He talks, how He thinks, how He acts, His character, His personality, His behavior; the Bible tells us all of that.

If you want to hear God, then you are going to have to get to know God and the primary way that we do that is through His Word.

Psalms 138:2 AMPC  I will worship toward Your holy temple and praise Your name for Your loving-kindness and for Your truth and faithfulness; for You have exalted above all else Your name and Your word and You have magnified Your word above all Your name!

Ephesians 1:16-17 TPT  my heart is always full and overflowing with thanks to God for you as I constantly remember you in my prayers.  (17)  I pray that the Father of glory, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, would impart to you the riches of the Spirit of wisdom and the Spirit of revelation to know him through your deepening intimacy with him.

You will never learn to hear from God without getting into His Word.

    1. His Voice

God still speaks to His people today.

He will speak to you in your spirit. He lives there.

John 10:3-5 TPT  and because the gatekeeper knows who he is, he opens the gate to let him in. And the sheep recognize the voice of the true Shepherd, for he calls his own by name and leads them out, for they belong to him.  (4)  And when he has brought out all his sheep, he walks ahead of them and they will follow him, for they are familiar with his voice.  (5)  But they will run away from strangers and never follow them because they know it’s the voice of a stranger.”

John 10:27 TPT  My own sheep will hear my voice and I know each one, and they will follow me.

His voice will be down on the inside of you and will always be in line with His Word.

(Give the illustration of when my mother calls me on the phone, I do not have to ask, “Who is this?” because I have spent enough time with her that I know her voice.)

It is really as simple as this: if you want to hear God’s voice clearly, spend more time with Him.

    1. His Counsel

    Psalms 1:1 NKJV (1)  Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

Proverbs 11:14 NKJV (14)  Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 12:15 NKJV (15)  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

Proverbs 15:22 NKJV (22)  Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established.

Proverbs 19:20 NKJV (20)  Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.

Counsel should always be in line with the Word of God.

God sends people into our lives to help bring us counsel from Him to help us.

Many people ask for counsel but few heed it.

Give the example of Rehoboam seeking counsel about how to rule the nation of Israel. His elders told him to serve the people and the people will serve you. He still went to his friends and asked for their counsel and they told him to tell the people, “If you think my Father Solomon’s rule was tough, my little finger carries more weight than His whole kingdom…” The people of the north said we want no part in that and the kingdom was split and Jeroboam ruled the north. (1 Kings 12:6-14)

    1. His Peace

Colossians 3:15 NKJV And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Colossians 3:15 TPT  Let your heart be always guided by the peace of the Anointed One, who called you to peace as part of his one body. And always be thankful.

Colossians 3:15 GNB The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful.

When you are making a decision, pursue after peace in your heart and allow it to rule or determine the final decisions of your life.

Peace in your heart is God speaking to you.

    If you lose peace, STOP!

If you have lost your peace, go back to where you last had peace and start again. Peace is waiting on you at that point.

These are the ways to become more spiritually sensitive:

    1. Meditate in the Word of God.

Joshua 1:8 NLT  Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

    1. Practice the Word of God.

James 1:22 NLT  But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

John 14:21 TPT  Those who truly love me are those who obey my commands. Whoever passionately loves me will be passionately loved by my Father. And I will passionately love you in return and will manifest my life within you.”

    1. Give the Word of God first place.

Proverbs 4:20-22 NKJV  My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.  (21)  Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;  (22)  For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

    1. Instantly obey the voice of your spirit (your conscience).

Galatians 6:5 TPT  Every believer is ultimately responsible for his or her own conscience.

    1. Spend time praying in other tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV  For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

  • Breakthrough – 2020 – Part 2

What are you believing for yourself and your family for 2020?

Seven Areas of Breakthrough This Year:

    1. Faith – your personal walk with God
    2. Family – marriage, with children
    3. Finances – managing our money, etc.
    4. Freedom – areas of our lives that we have strongholds
    5. Fun – we need to enjoy life (Satan did not create fun, he just perverted it.)
    6. Field of endeavor (job or vocation)
    7. Friendships (social relationships)

If I told you, you could do something for 15 minutes a day and you will without a doubt experience a supernatural breakthrough in your relationship with God, would you do it?

We are going to talk about how to have a quiet time.

Many of us had tried to have a quiet time and it did not work like we had hoped.

Understand that having quiet time is not the same thing as a time of intercessory prayer time. There are manuals that tell us how to have a prayer life but this is not necessarily a prayer time.

There are three myths about quiet time that we need to address:
    1. You can only have a quiet time from 4 AM until 6 AM.

If you show up at 7 AM God is not going to tell you, “We’re closed.”

You can have quiet time anytime. I do suggest that you do it at the beginning of your day because it sets the tone for your day.

    1. Your quiet time must last at least one hour.

There is nothing in the scripture that mandates that our quiet time should be a minimum of an hour.

Remember, it is the quality of your quiet time that always outweighs the quantity of your quiet time.

    1. Your quiet time journal must sound like the Bible.

Most of the time the Lord speaks to us in real life terms.

Really the key in all of this is you and God come up with the best format on your quiet time.

Be flexible with the Lord. He may have you read the Bible the entire time. He may have you pray in the Spirit the whole time.

Four Steps to Starting a Quiet Time:
    1. Quiet or clear your mind.

This is supposed to be a quiet time and sometimes our prayer manuals make it a busy time.

Psalms 131:2 | TPT  I am humbled and quieted in your presence. Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap, I’m your resting child and my soul is content in you.

Psalms 62:1,5 | NIV  For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. (5) Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

Your soul will try and talk to you when you are supposed to be getting quiet and listening to the Lord.

As your spirit grows and matures, your soul begins to lose control and it will throw a fit and try and rebel.

If your soul is not held in the bosom of God it will pitch a fit all the time.

If a thought comes to your mind, jot it down so that you can move on with God.

    1. Focus your mind.

Music is a great tool to use to focus your mind on the Lord.

Psalms 108:1 | TPT  A poetic psalm, by King David. My heart, O God, is quiet and confident, all because of you. Now I can sing my song with passionate praises! Awake, O my soul, with the music of his splendor.

Psalms 49:3-4 | TPT  For wisdom will come from my mouth; words of insight and understanding will be heard from the musings of my heart.  (4)  I will break open mysteries with my music, and my song will release riddles solved.

God will give you a song that is for you that day.

Don’t worry about how it sounds. When you sing, God does not hear your voice. He hears your heart. (John 4:23)

(This is the link to some of the worship music I use to create a prayerful atmosphere while I have my quiet time:)

    1. Pray your heart.

You need to pray about what is on your heart that day.

Sometimes our prayer list is not necessarily on our hearts for that day.

James 5:16 | TPT  Confess and acknowledge how you have offended one another and then pray for one another to be instantly healed, for tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer!

You only pray fervently and passionately about what is on your heart, not just “vain repetitions.”

There is nothing selfish about praying about the areas of your life that are on your heart during that quiet time.

Philippians 4:6-7 | TPT  Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life,  (7)  then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will make the answers known to you through Jesus Christ.

The way that you can be anxious for nothing is by praying about all those things that you are being tempted to be anxious about.

        • Prayer is talking to God like you would talk to anyone else.
        • If you pour your stresses out on God in the morning it will amaze you how stress free you will be all day.
        • God will give you wisdom on how to handle the situation that is causing the stress.
    1. Pray for one other person in your life.

James 5:16 | TPT  Confess and acknowledge how you have offended one another and then pray for one another to be instantly healed, for tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer!

There is a lot that can happen when we pray for someone in our lives that needs your prayer. God will move in their lives and in yours.

Job 42:10 | NLT  When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before!

    1. Renew your mind.

You must spend time every day reading and thinking about the Word of God in order for your mind to be renewed.

Romans 12:2 | TPT  Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.

James 1:21 | TLB  So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside, and humbly be glad for the wonderful message we have received, for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts.

You and God can come up with a plan on reading the Bible. You can read a chapter a day from Proverbs or you can use a read through the Bible in a year plan.

Understand this: you will have quiet times where you read the Word and it does not seem like you are getting anything out of it and sometimes it will jump off the page.

It is just like exercising; sometimes it feels good and sometimes it does not feel good but if you keep doing it, you are going to see results from it after time. It is part of life and growing in the Lord and you will sharpen your ability to hear from the Lord.

People who don’t know the Word cannot have faith.

You will never be able to believe God for your breakthrough in any situation until you get in the Word.

Coming to church and hearing me preach the Word once a week is not enough Word to build your faith for a breakthrough in that area. You need the Word every day.

Five Steps To Starting A Quiet Time:

    1. Quiet your mind.
    2. Focus your mind.
    3. Pray your heart.
    4. Pray for one other person in your life.
    5. Renew your mind.
