  • The Holy Spirit – Life and Power – Part 4

I would like to acknowledge the insight received from Pastor Rick Renner for these lessons on the Fruit of the Spirit found in his book, Sparkling Gems from the Greek – Volume 1.

Galatians 5:19-23 | NKJV (19) Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,  (20)  idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,  (21)  envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.  (22)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Notice the contrast that Paul brings out here between the “works of the flesh” and the “fruit of the Spirit.”

The Greek word translated “works” here is the word “ergos” which means hard work or hard labor.

The reason Paul used this word is that the works of the flesh produce the hardest route for any individual.

On the other hand, a life dominated by the Holy Spirit is filled with benefits and blessings.

The reason Paul used the word “fruit” referring to a life dominated by the Holy Spirit is because fruit is always produced, whether plant, animal, or human, from some kind of seed.

The character of the seed determines the fruit.

The moment you received Jesus as your Savior by faith, God sowed His Spirit and Word into your heart like a seed, and you were spiritually Born again by the incorruptible seed of the Word of God. (1 Peter 1:23)

Just like apples always produce apples and oranges always produce oranges, God’s seed inside you began to immediately produce God (God-like character) on the inside of you.

The kind of seed always determines the outcome of the fruit; therefore, you should expect your life to yield the fruits of the Spirit for that is the seed God has sown in your heart.

The fruit that the Holy Spirit produces is wonderful, godly fruit, overflowing with blessings and life.

1 Thessalonians 1:6 | NKJV (6) And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,

The word “affliction” used in this verse is the Greek word thlipsis. This word is so strong that it leaves no room for misunderstanding regarding the intensity of the afflictions the Thessalonians faced.

The word thlipsis conveys the idea of a heavy-pressure situation. One scholar says it was first used to describe the specific act of tying a victim with a rope, laying him on his back, and then placing a huge boulder on top of him until his body was crushed. Paul uses this word to alert us to moments when he or others went through grueling, crushing situations that would have been unbearable, intolerable, and impossible to survive if it had not been for the help of the Holy Spirit.

    Joy

One of the ways the Holy Spirit helps in these situations is to give us supernatural “joy.” However, it’s important to understand that this divine joy isn’t on the same low level of mere happiness. Happiness is based on circumstantial pleasure, merriment, hilarity, exuberance, excitement, or something that causes one to feel hopeful or to be in high spirits. These fleeting emotions of happiness, although very pleasurable at the moment, usually go just as quickly as they came. All it takes is one piece of bad news, a sour look from a fellow employee, a harsh word from a spouse, or an electric bill that is larger than what was anticipated — and that emotion of happiness can disappear right before a person’s eyes!

Joy is unaffected by outward circumstances. In fact, it usually thrives best when times are tough! It is God’s supernatural response to the devil’s attacks!

The Greek word for “joy” is chara, derived from the word charis, which is the Greek word for grace.

This is important to note, for it tells us categorically that chara (“joy”) is produced by the charis (“grace”) of God.

This means “joy” isn’t a human-based happiness that comes and goes. Rather, true “joy” is divine in origin, a fruit of the Spirit that is manifested particularly in hard times. Someone may feel happiness, merriment, hilarity, exuberance, excitement, or “high spirits,” but all of these are fleeting emotions. On the other hand, “joy” is a Spirit-given expression that flourishes best when times are strenuous, daunting, and tough!

In the example given in First Thessalonians 1:6, the Thessalonians were under great stress due to persecution; yet in the midst of it all, they continued to experience great joy. In fact, the Greek strongly implies that their supernatural joy was due to the Holy Spirit working inside them.

1 Thessalonians 1:6 | Weymouth (6) And you followed the pattern set you by us and by the Master, after you had received the Message amid severe persecution, and yet with the joy which the Holy Spirit gives,

The best that the lost world has to offer is a temporary happiness. But when the seed of God has been placed inside your human spirit, that divine seed produces a “joy” that isn’t based on outward events or circumstances. In fact, when times get very challenging, the supernatural life of God rises up inside you to defy that devilish pressure! This supernatural “joy” will sustain you in even the hardest of times!

    Peace

Paul listed this supernatural “peace” in Galatians 5:22 when he wrote about the fruit of the Spirit. He said, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.…”

The word “peace” comes from the Greek word eirene, the Greek equivalent for the Hebrew word shalom, which expresses the idea of wholeness, completeness, or tranquility in the soul that is unaffected by outward circumstances or pressures. The word eirene strongly suggests the rule of order in place of chaos. When a person is dominated by eirene (“peace”), he has a calm, inner stability that results in the ability to conduct himself peacefully, even during circumstances that would normally be very nerve-racking, traumatic, or upsetting.

The Hebrew counterpart, the word shalom, indicates that this dominating peace ultimately gives rise to prosperity in one’s soul. Rather than allowing the difficulties and pressures of life to break him, a person who is possessed by eirene (“peace”) is whole, complete, orderly, stable, and poised for -blessing. soundness, health, well-being, prosperity.

The New Testament is filled with examples of this supernatural peace that the Holy Spirit produces. One classic example is found in Acts 27, when the apostle Paul found himself in a ship that was being dangerously tossed back and forth by the raging waves of the sea.

Acts 27:13-20 | NKJV (13) When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete.  (14)  But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon. (15) So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive. (16) And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty. (17) When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.  (18) And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.  (19) On the third day we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands.  (20) Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.

Notice verse 14 says, “…There arose against it a tempestuous wind….” — which is the Greek word tuphonikos, a compound of the words tuphos and nikos. The word tuphos means typhoon, and nikos means to subdue or to conquer. Put these two words together, and it pictures a typhoon from which there is no escape. This is a storm so immense that it conquers and dominates everything in sight. Acts 27:14 tells us that this storm was called “Euroclydon” — the term professional sailors used to describe the deadly northeastern winter storms that blew across the Mediterranean Sea, causing many shipwrecks that resulted in the loss of many lives every year.

Acts 27:21-25 | NKJV (21) But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.  (22)  And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.  (23)  For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, (24) saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’  (25) Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.

Paul had heard from the Lord, which caused supernatural peace to rise up on the inside of him. Therefore, he was able to be a rock in the middle of a very serious situation. His peace brought strength to everyone on that ship!

As noted earlier, this kind of “peace” is produced by the Holy Spirit. Now think back on the meaning of the word eirene (“peace”) in light of Paul’s experience on that ship. Remember, this word expresses the idea of wholeness, completeness, or tranquility in the soul that is unaffected by outward circumstances or pressures. It strongly suggests the rule of order in the place of chaos. When a person is dominated by eirene (“peace”), he has a calm, inner stability that results in the ability to conduct himself peacefully, even though circumstances normally would be very nerve-racking, traumatic, or upsetting. Isn’t this the exact quality Paul manifested that day on the ship?

Remember, the seeds for this fruit is already inside you. You just need to allow the Holy Spirit to produce this fruit in us.

So don’t think you have to give way to upsetting emotions in difficult or challenging moments. If you’ll let the Holy Spirit work in you, He will release a supernatural joy and a dominating peace from way down deep inside you. These fruits of the Spirit have the power to keep you joyful, calm, stable, and peaceful, even though you are facing circumstances that would normally push you over the edge! Why don’t you take a few minutes today to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to produce the supernatural fruits of joy and peace in you?

  • The Holy Spirit – Life and Power – Part 3

The reason Paul used this word is that the works of the flesh produce the hardest route for any individual, yet the flesh still cries out to be in charge and screaming to have its own way, to be the boss.

On the other hand, a life dominated by the Holy Spirit is filled with benefits and blessings.

The reason Paul used the word “fruit” referring to a life dominated by the Holy Spirit is because fruit is always produced, whether plant, animal, or human, from some kind of seed.

The kind of seed always determines its fruit. (Genesis 1:11-12)

Apples always produce apples; oranges always produce oranges; dogs always produce dogs; cats always produce cats; humans always produce humans.

The character of the seed determines the fruit.

The moment you received Jesus as your Savior by faith, God sowed His Spirit and Word into your heart like a seed, and you were spiritually Born again by the incorruptible seed of the Word of God.

1 Peter 1:23 | NKJV (23) having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

As you allow the Holy Spirit to produce these fruits in you, you will find that people love to be near you because you’re such a pleasurable experience for them, and they want to come back for multiple servings of that great fruit.

Galatians 5:22 | NKJV (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love…

At the time the New Testament was written, in the Greek language there were four primary words for love:

    1. Eros: This is the word for a sexual, physical love and where we get the word erotic. In the Greek culture, this word referred to sensual, carnal impulses to satisfy or gratify the sexual desires of the flesh. This word is not a giving type of “love” but a carnal love that only seeks to satisfy and fulfill its own desires.

In the Greek culture, eros represented a carnal, raw, low-level craving, or yearning for sexual fulfillment and is so flesh-based and is so far removed from the level of love that God expects of believers, it does not appear in the New Testament once.

    1. Stergo: This word primarily pictures the love that exists between parents and children or the love that exists between members of a family.

This word is used in the negative sense in the following Scripture warning of what would happen in the last days:

2 Timothy 3:3 | AMPC (3) They will be] without natural [human] affection (callous and inhuman)…

    2 Timothy 3:3 | GW (3) …and lack normal affection for their families…

    1. Phileo: This word describes “affection” such as the affection between a boyfriend and girlfriend or the affinity between two close friends. It carries the idea of two or more people who feel compatible, well-matched, well-suited, and complimentary to each other.

We find this word used in our English words such as:

        • Philadelphia – brotherly love.
        • Philanthropic – one who loves or is kind to humanity.
        • Philosophic – one which has a love of wisdom.

But even with all of this, it still falls short of the fourth and highest kind of love.

    1. Agape: this the word used most in the New Testament to depict the love of God. There is not a higher, finer, or more excellent love than agape love.

Pastor Rick Renner defines agape as follows:

Agape occurs when an individual sees, recognizes, understands, or appreciates the value of a person, causing the viewer to behold this person in great esteem, awe, admiration, wonder, and sincere appreciation. Such great respect is awakened in the heart of the observer for the person he is beholding that he is compelled to love them. In fact, his love for that person is so strong that it is irresistible.

John 3:16 | NKJV (16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

In the phrase, “For God so loved the world,” the word “love” is the word agape.

This means when God looked upon the human race, He stood in awe of mankind, even though man was lost in sin. God admired man; He wondered at man; He held mankind in the highest appreciation. Even though mankind was held captive by Satan at that moment, God looked upon the world and saw His own image in man. The human race was so precious to God and He loved man so deeply that His heart was stirred to reach out and do something to save him. In other words, God’s love drove Him to action.

You see, agape is a love that loves so profoundly that it knows no limits or boundaries in how far, wide, high, and deep it will go to show that love to its recipient. If necessary, agape love will even sacrifice itself for the sake of that object or person it so deeply cherishes. Agape is the highest form of love — a self-sacrificial type of love that moves the lover to action. In contrast:

        • Eros is a self-seeking love.
        • Stergo is limited only to one’s family.
        • Phileo is based on mutual satisfaction and can feel disappointed.

Agape is a love that has no strings attached. It isn’t looking for what it can get, but for what it can give. Its awe of the one who is loved is so deep that it is compelled to shower love upon that object or person regardless of the response. This is the profound love God has for the human race, for He loved man when he was still lost in sin with no ability to love Him back. God simply loved mankind without any thought or expectation of receiving love in return.

When you love with such a pure love that you expect nothing back in return, it is impossible for you to feel hurt or let down by the response of the recipients of your love. You don’t love them for the purpose of getting something in return; you shower them with love simply because you love them. This kind of love is much higher than eros love that is based on selfishness; stergo love that is restricted by limitations; or phileo love that is rooted in mutual satisfaction. These three types of love are what I call low-level love, but agape is high-level love. It is a love that has no strings attached, a love that loves simply and purely — the God-kind of love.

1 John 3:16 | AMPC (16) By this we come to know (progressively to recognize, to perceive, to understand) the [essential] love: that He laid down His [own] life for us; and we ought to lay [our] lives down for [those who are our] brothers [in Him].

The Father loved us to the point of self-sacrifice. Jesus’ agape drove Him to lay down His life for us. In the same way, we are to agape our brothers and sisters to such a high extent that we would be willing to lay down our lives for them. If we are truly operating in agape and they don’t respond in like fashion, it won’t offend or hurt us. We are not looking for what others can do for us; we are simply focused on how to love others with no strings attached. Therefore, the way other people respond to us has no effect on our desire to shower them with agape love.

Further explaining the role of agape in our lives:

1 John 3:18 | NLT  (18) Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

The word “love” is again the word agape, which tells us that when agape is at work, it is a force so strong that it demonstrates itself with deeds and actions. This is not an empty love that talks but does nothing. It is a love that does something, just as God loved us and then did something to save us from our lost and sinful condition.

1 Corinthians 14:1 | AMPC  (1) EAGERLY PURSUE and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]…

The word “pursue” is the Greek word dioko, which means to hotly pursue. It was a hunting term that pictured a hunter following the tracks of an animal until he finally gets his game. This means that attaining this high-level love doesn’t come easy. If we want to attain agape love and regularly walk in it, we must hotly pursue it! It must be the focus and the aim of our lives.

If agape is the basis of your sexual relationship with your spouse instead of eros, you will always seek to serve and please your spouse rather than being self-centered and focused only on your needs. If agape is the basis of your family relationships rather than stergo, you will always remain devoted to your family, regardless of the disappointments that may occur along the way. And if agape is the basis of your friendships rather than phileo, you will be a faithful, immovable friend for life rather than a come-and-go friend who is faithful only as long as you get what you want out of the relationship. In fact, if agape is the driving motivation of your life and the force behind all your relationships, it will make you to be the best, most devoted, faithful, and reliable friend anyone has ever known.

You may ask, “But how can I possess such love? Is it really possible for me to regularly exhibit such love in my life for other people?” If you were seeking to walk in the kind of love that originates in the power of your flesh, it would be impossible, for flesh is selfish and self-focused and therefore cannot love that highly. But because the seed of God’s Word has been sown into your own human spirit, the potential for this divine love is within you all the time.

Now it is up to you to shove the flesh aside and release the love of God from down deep inside. If you will let the Spirit of God release it from your heart, you will discover and enjoy the fruit of the Spirit called “love.” This high-level love is already inside you. Now it’s time for you to free that love and allow the Holy Spirit to manifest it in your life!

  • The Holy Spirit – Life and Power – Part 2

    Who is the Holy Spirit?

Genesis 1:2 | NKJV (2) The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Ruwach – a wind, breath, a blast of breath.

    John 6:63 | NIV

Pneuma – a current of air, blast of breath, a strong breeze.

    1. The Holy Spirit is a person.

John 14:16-17 | NKJV (16) And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever– (17) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

    1. He is the Third Person in the Trinity.
    2. The Holy Spirit is the perfect gentleman.

Luke 11:13 | NKJV (13) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Once we are Born Again, there is a ministry that the Holy Spirit that the world cannot receive but we CAN RECEIVE. Any gift God gives, God’s grace supplies it, but we must receive it.

Jesus Christ is God’s gift to the world, but the Holy Spirit is God’s gift to the believer.

Life and Power are the two main ministries of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Another way of saying this is the ministry of the Holy Spirit WITHIN us and UPON us.

John 14:16-17 | NKJV And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever– (17) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

    1. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of their sin
    2. The Holy Spirit draws people to Jesus
    The Holy Spirit Within Us
    1. The Holy Spirit causes us to be Born Again.

John 3:3-6 | NKJV (3) Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (4) Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” (5) Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

    1. The Holy Spirit enables us to have God’s help.

John 14:16 | NKJV (16) And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

Helper (Greek: parakletos) – one called alongside to help and offer aid, one who comes forwards in behalf of and as the representative of another.

John 14:16 | AMPC (16) And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever–

    1. The Holy Spirit enables us to develop Christ-like character.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 | NLT (17) For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (18) So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord–who is the Spirit–makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.

Galatians 5:22-23 | NLT (22) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

    1. The Holy Spirit wants to be our guide.

Romans 8:14 | NIV (14) For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

    1. The Holy Spirit wants to teach us.

John 14:26 | NKJV (26) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:13 | NKJV (13) However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

    The Holy Spirit Upon Us
    1. The Holy Spirit equips us with His power.

Acts 1:7-8 NKJV (7) And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (8) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8 | AMPC (8) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

    1. The Holy Spirit wants to manifest Himself through us.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 | NKJV (4) There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. (5) There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. (6) And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. (7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: (8) for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, (9) to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, (10) to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

  • The Holy Spirit – Life and Power – Part 1

    Who is the Holy Spirit?

Genesis 1:2 | NKJV (2) The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Ruwach – a wind, breath, a blast of breath.

John 6:63 | NIV (63) The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you–they are full of the Spirit and life.

Pneuma – a current of air, blast of breath, a strong breeze.

    1. The Holy Spirit is a person.

    He is not an “it”.

Matthew 28:19 | NKJV (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 3:16-17 | NKJV (16) When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. (17) And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

    1. The Holy Spirit is the perfect gentleman.

The Holy Spirit will not force Himself upon anyone. He must be received. He will never override anyone’s will or power of choice.

Luke 11:11-13 | NKJV (11) If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? (12) Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? (13) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Life and Power are the two main ministries of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Luke 10:25-37 | NKJV (25) And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (26) He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” (27) So he answered and said, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND,’ and ‘YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’” (28) And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” (29) But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (30) Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. (31) Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. (32) Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. (33) But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. (34) So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. (35) On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ (36) So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” (37) And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Of course, we are taught that this parable was intended to teach us to live in a way that is nice and helpful to our neighbor.

Religion has hijacked this parable and said that being good to people is how you get into Heaven, but the Word of God teaches that the only way to Heaven is through faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus is actually giving us a parable that shows the fall of man.

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho – literally a downhill walk and fell among thieves. When Adam fell, he turned everything over to the main thief and thieves with him being Satan and his kingdom.

Jesus said the thieves did three things to the man:

    • They stripped him of his raiment
    • They wounded him
    • They left him half dead

This is the curse of the law: poverty, sickness and spiritual death.

The first two people that came by, the priest and Levite, both represented the law. But the law cannot help us. The law can only expose the condition that we are in and condemn us.

The Good Samaritan then came by which is a type of Jesus. Why a Good Samaritan? Samaritans were outcasts of Jewish Society and so was Jesus.

So, the Samaritan went to him. Jesus came to us.

Jesus bandaged up our wounds and then he poured in two elements: oil and wine, types of the Holy Spirit.

The first thing he poured in was oil which is a type of the Holy Spirit in the New Birth, and then he poured in wine which is a type of the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

    • The Holy Spirit causes us to be Born Again and gives us eternal life.

    • The Holy Spirit equips us with His power.

Acts 1:8 | AMPC (8) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

The types of the Holy Spirit:

    • Oil and wine
    • The Animal
    • The host of the inn

He put the man on his donkey and carried him to the inn. The animal is the burden bearer (the Holy Spirit) and the inn is a type of the church.

The innkeeper is a type of the Holy Spirit. When the Samaritan left, he turned the care of the man over to the innkeeper who would take care of the man just like the Samaritan would.

The Samaritan took out two pennies which represented two days wages and said, “…when I come back…I will settle up”.

Acts 1:9-11 | NKJV (9) Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. (10) And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, (11) who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

  • Reboot – Part 7

REBOOT – to start (something) anew; to refresh (something) by making a new start or creating a new version; to make a fresh start; give fresh impetus or forward motion to something.

Psalms 51:12 | NKJV Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

Simplifying your life is to make good choices, choosing those things that are needful to organize the resources of our lives.

The solution to a complicated life is to be a better manager of your life.

The resources of our lives can be categorized in three general areas:

    1. Time Management
    2. Resource Management
    3. Relationship Management

We can also see that the complications of our lives will show up in these three areas of our lives.

We are going to continue to look at Relationship Management.

Of the three areas that we are responsible for managing well, this one would probably be the most important. This stewardship affects every other area of our lives and has a great impact on the quality of our lives.

How do we manage relationships: LOVE!

God’s love is the greatest resource we have been given to manage relationships.

John 13:34-35 | NKJV (34) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

So, what is Gold Standard for God’s love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 | AMPC (4) Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. (5) It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. (6) It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. (7) Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening]. (8) Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy (the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth].

Here is a huge key in learning to walk in love:

John 15:9 | NKJV “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.

To the degree that we know and believe that God loves us, is the degree that we will be able to love other people.

1 John 4:16 | AMPC And we know (understand, recognize, are conscious of, by observation and by experience) and believe (adhere to and put faith in and rely on) the love God cherishes for us. God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God, and God dwells and continues in him.

How do we get a revelation of God’s love for us?

    1. Fellowship with God by spending time in God’s Word and in prayer.

Attention breeds appetite. Attention to right things breeds the right appetites, whereas attention to wrong things breeds wrong appetites.

    1. Focus your attention on meeting the needs of other people.

    Another element to managing relationships:

“Agape” love is the kind of love that gives to demonstrate itself.

In the New Testament, of the 160 times love is mentioned, 145 times it is agape but the other times it is the Greek word “phileo”.

“Phileo” is the feeling or fond emotion of love, a brotherly love, or friendship love.

    • God desires for us to cultivate a felt affection towards Him in our relationship with Him.

So, we need this phileo love in our relationship with God, but we also need it in our relationships with other people.

    • Cultivating affection for others has to do with our thinking.

If we dwell on the pain, hurt or disappointment that someone may have caused us then we will tend to cultivate negative feelings towards someone.

The Bible teaches us to think about people in a good light. Think about something positive about them. In the very least, think about how much God loves them and how affectionate He is towards them.

1 Corinthians 13:7 | TPT Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others. Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up.

    • Choices lead and feelings follow!

Sow seeds of affection towards others.

    • Show them kindness by acts of love and it might eventually win them over.

Romans 12:20-21 | NKJV (20) Therefore “IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM; IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP COALS OF FIRE ON HIS HEAD.” (21) Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    • Praying for others is a powerful thing we can do to cultivate affection for them.

Luke 6:27-28 | NKJV (27) “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, (28) bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.

John 16:26-27 | NKJV (26) In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; (27) for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.

The word for love in this verse is “phileo”. What does this mean? It means God loves us affectionately and tenderly.

    • In other words, God “feels” something about you when He thinks of you.

His love towards you is not simply an emotionless action of giving because He is supposed to do that.

  • Reboot – Part 6

We are going to look at Relationship Management.

Of the three areas that we are responsible for managing well, this one would probably be the most important.

This stewardship affects every other area of our lives and has a great impact on the quality of our lives.

    Why is this so important?

God is constantly desiring to move in our lives, but if we have mismanaged relationships, we hinder Him.

The very people that we may be mad at or are holding unforgiveness towards, might be the ones that He desires to bless us through.

An example of why this is so important:

If a father does not properly manage his relationship with his children, he will probably drive those children away from him and thus not have any influence in their lives.

Proverbs 11:29 NKJV He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.

How do we manage relationships: LOVE!

God’s love is the greatest resource we have been given to manage relationships.

    1 Corinthians 13:8a NKJV (8) Love never fails…

John 13:34-35 NKJV A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

We already have this ability on the inside of us!

Romans 5:5 NKJV Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

    God’s love is always unconditional.

We have the tendency to love others conditionally and in degrees based on we perceive and feel about others. God does not do this. His love is unconditional and not based on anything except Himself.

God’s love is the kind of love that always gives and never takes.

John 3:16 NKJV For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

This is the kind of love that makes you a resource to other people and not a consumer.

So, what is Gold Standard for God’s love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 AMPC (4) Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

If there is a relationship that is giving us a problem, it does not necessarily indicate there is a problem with the other person. It could be that there is something wrong with our love-walk.

Remember, this is a process. You are not going to change this in your life over-night, but you can change. That is because you have God’s love already on the inside of you and God’s love NEVER FAILS.

Here is a huge key in learning to walk in love:

John 15:9 NKJV “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.

To the degree that we know and believe that God loves us, is the degree that we will be able to love other people.

1 John 4:16 AMPC And we know (understand, recognize, are conscious of, by observation and by experience) and believe (adhere to and put faith in and rely on) the love God cherishes for us. God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God, and God dwells and continues in him.

Paul prayed that we would get this revelation:

Ephesians 3:17-19 NKJV (17) that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height– (19) to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

If there is fear in our lives, this is an opportunity for us to grow in the love of God.

1 John 4:18 | AMPC There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection].

    • Are you worried about your needs being met? Then you are not sure about God’s love for you.
    • Are you afraid of the Doctor’s report? Then you need to know and understand the love God has for you.
    • Are you afraid that you have messed up so bad that God does not want you to be His child anymore? Then you need a revelation of how much God loves you.
  • Reboot – Part 5

REBOOT – to start (something) anew; to refresh (something) by making a new start or creating a new version; to make a fresh start; give fresh impetus or forward motion to something.

Psalms 51:12 | NKJV Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

This word appears over 1058 times in the Old Testament.

Manage – the organization of the resource at your disposal to accomplish the desired purpose.

    Resource Management

There are some truths that we must learn about resource management:

    • God is not against His people having wealth and blessing in their lives.
    • He does not want wealth and materialism to control or dominate our lives.

1 Timothy 6:17 | TPT To all the rich of this world, I command you not to be wrapped in thoughts of pride over your prosperity, or rely on your wealth, for your riches are unreliable and nothing compared to the living God. Trust instead in the one who has lavished upon us all good things, fulfilling our every need.

    • God has a plan whereby He wants to get His blessing into our lives, and we must follow that plan to experience His highest and best.

There are some mindsets that we must have so that we manage our resources properly:

    • Our goals and objectives must always be about His objectives.

Matthew 6:33 | AMPC But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

    • We are simply managers or stewards of the resources that God puts into our hands.

Our responsibility is to effectively manage what God entrusts to us so that it multiplies for His glory.

Matthew 25:21 | NKJV His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

    • Our main objective in resource management should be to make as many of our resources available for God’s plans in the earth.
    • God empowers us supernaturally to generate income for us to be a greater blessing in the earth.

Deuteronomy 8:18 | NKJV “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

    • Tithing is a Biblical, New Testament principle that opens the door for God’s blessing on our resources.

Malachi 3:10 | NLT Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in My Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put Me to the test!

Hebrews 7:8 | NKJV Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.

    • Giving in addition to your tithes to further the work of God is seed that God can bless and bring harvest into our lives.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11 | AMPC (6) [Remember] this: he who sows sparingly and grudgingly will also reap sparingly and grudgingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to someone] will also reap generously and with blessings. (7) Let each one [give] as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful (joyous, “prompt to do it”) giver [whose heart is in his giving]. [Prov. 22:9.] (8) And God is able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation]. (9) As it is written, He [the benevolent person] scatters abroad; He gives to the poor; His deeds of justice and goodness and kindness and benevolence will go on and endure forever! [Ps. 112:9.] (10) And [God] Who provides seed for the sower and bread for eating will also provide and multiply your [resources for] sowing and increase the fruits of your righteousness [which manifests itself in active goodness, kindness, and charity]. (11) Thus you will be enriched in all things and in every way, so that you can be generous, and [your generosity as it is] administered by us will bring forth thanksgiving to God.

    • A budget is simply a plan of how your money will be allocated and spent.

Luke 14:28 | NLT “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?

Proverbs 27:23-24 | AMPC Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds; (24) For riches are not forever; does a crown endure to all generations?

    • It is not a sin to borrow money, However, it is a sin to fail to pay it back.

Romans 13:8 | AMPC Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor [who practices loving others] has fulfilled the Law [relating to one’s fellowmen, meeting all its requirements].

The word “owe” in the Greek means to fail in duty or an obligation. If borrowing was a sin, then why did God tell the Children of Israel to get other people into sin when He said:

Deuteronomy 28:12 | NKJV “…You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.

    • It is a sin to overextend or over-obligate yourself through debt.

Proverbs 22:7 NKJV The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender.

Overextending yourself is the same as bondage or enslavement.

  • Reboot – Part 4

REBOOT – to start (something) anew; to refresh (something) by making a new start or creating a new version; to make a fresh start; give fresh impetus or forward motion to something.

Psalms 51:12 | NKJV Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

Restore – Hebrew (sub – Pronounced Shoob) – A verb meaning to turn, to return, to go back, to do again, to change, to withdraw, to bring back, to reestablish, to be returned, to bring back, to take, to restore, to recompense, to answer, to hinder.

This word appears over 1058 times in the Old Testament.

Psalms 85:6 | NKJV Will You not revive us again, That Your people may rejoice in You?

Psalms 119:130 | NKJV The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Hebrew – someone that is naïve concerning the challenges and complexities of life.

Dictionary – not complicated or complex, free of deceit or guile, believing every word, UNCLUTTERED

To place all of this in its proper context, we must always remember that we are all called to be stewards or managers of our resources for God to accomplish His purpose in the earth.

Manage – the organization of the resource at your disposal to accomplish the desired purpose.

Proverbs 24:3-4 | AMPC (3) Through skillful and godly Wisdom is a house (a life, a home, a family) built, and by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation], (4) And by knowledge shall its chambers [of every area] be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Knowledge – the acquisition of facts, truths and principles

Wisdom – applying knowledge to make good decisions

Understanding – to mentally organize, or arrange. The ability to arrange the information so that it connects with each other so that it makes sense to you.

Wisdom will not come until you are organized.

There are two phases to time management:

    • Planning
    • Implementation

There is something that we need to understand about the supernatural: God cannot do His part unless you start with your part.

    Planning

    Three major contributors to planning:

    1. Meditation
    2. Selectivity

It is seeking after what is vital, excellent and of real value. (Philippians 1:9-10 AMPC)

A lot of our lives are not being defined by the important – they are being defined by the urgent.

    1. Delegation

Delegate the responsibility of time-consuming tasks to someone else freeing your time.

    Implementation

Three major contributors to implementing your plan:

    1. Be single-minded in following your plan

Be determined in the pursuit of your plan.

Proverbs 4:25-27 | NKJV Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. (26) Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. (27) Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.

James 1:7 | TPT (7-8) When you are half-hearted and wavering it leaves you unstable. Can you really expect to receive anything from the Lord when you’re in that condition?

What is your time worth? Do you have a hard time saying “No”?

    1. Conserve your energy

Main drain of energy is tension anxiety or stress.

Philippians 4:6 | AMPC Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.

Isaiah 40:28-31 | ERV (28) Surely you know the truth. Surely you have heard. The LORD is the God who lives forever! He created all the faraway places on earth. He does not get tired and weary. You cannot learn all he knows. (29) He helps tired people be strong. He gives power to those without it. (30) Young men get tired and need to rest. Even young boys stumble and fall. (31) But those who trust in the LORD will become strong again—like eagles that grow new feathers. They will run and not get weak. They will walk and not get tired.

Waiting upon the Lord means to look to and for God with expectation.

    1. Walk in the light.

    God is light.

James 1:17 | NKJV Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

What does this mean to us?

Ephesians 5:8 | NKJV For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

You are a spiritual being living in a natural world.

What happens when you put God first in your time management? We move closer to the light.

What happens when we walk in the light of God’s Word? We move closer to the light.

The word “walk” means to be occupied with God.

  • Reboot – Part 3

Dictionary – not complicated or complex, free of deceit or guile, believing every word

To place all of this in its proper context, we must always remember that we are all called to be stewards or managers of our resources for God in order to accomplish His purpose in the earth.

Manage – the organization of the resource at your disposal in order to accomplish the desired purpose.

Simplifying your life is to make good choices, choosing those things that are needful in order to organize the resources of our lives.

The solution to a complicated life is to be a better manager of your life.

The resources of our lives can be categorized in three general areas:

    1. Time Management
    2. Resource Management
    3. Relationship Management

We can also see that the complications of our lives will show up in these three areas of our lives.

Proverbs 10:23 | NKJV To do evil is like sport to a fool, But a man of understanding has wisdom.

Proverbs 24:30-34 | NKJV (30) I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; (31) And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. (32) When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: (33) A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; (34) So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.

The lazy man and the man who was not organized achieved the same results – failure and chaos.

Proverbs 16:16 | NKJV How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

Organization is second in value only to wisdom.

Organization – to put in working order, to gather available elements into a functional arrangement

Because God has called us to be organized, He has given us the ability to be organized or He would be unjust.

We are required to manage or organize the resources of our lives in order to carry God’s will in the earth.

We must learn not to confuse “neat and tidy” with organized. They can be two different things.

Being organized has less to do with the way an environment “looks” than how effectively it “functions”.

There are two phases to time management:

    • Planning
    • Implementation

Jeremiah 29:11 | AMPC For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.

There is something that we need to understand about the supernatural: God cannot do His part unless you start with your part.

    Planning

    Three major contributors to planning:

    1. Meditation

Joshua 1:8 | NKJV This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Psalms 2:1 | KJV Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

Meditate – means to mentally image, using your imagination

Build pictures of how your day will be. The more pictures you have of how your day will be, the less complicated your life will be and the less opportunity there will be for the enemy to cause challenges.

    1. Selectivity

Martha (of Mary and Martha) needed to do the best things for her instead of “good” things.

Philippians 1:9-10 | AMPC And this I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment], (10) So that you may surely learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble].

A lot of our lives are not being defined by the important – they are being defined by the urgent.

Life’s Priorities According to the Word of God:

        • My relationship with God
        • My relationship with my spouse
        • My relationship with my children
        • My relationship with my church
        • My job
        • My social life.
    1. Delegation

Delegate the responsibility of time consuming tasks to someone else freeing your time.

The best manager is the best delegator.

When you delegate, you are training, and you are freeing your time.

  • Reboot – Part 2

In praying about this new year and the direction that the Lord wants me to go personally, I heard in my spirit the words reset or reboot.

Being a computer guy for many years, I knew exactly what the Lord meant by a “reboot”.

Sometimes your phone, your computer, your tablet, or whatever device you have can get bogged down over time because of software, downloads, and old programs.

Sometimes the system can get bloated with unnecessary things that will slow it down and hinder its progress. The memory can get overladen with parts of a program that you are no longer running but they linger there until you do something to get rid of them.

The only way to get rid of those things in your system is to do a reboot of your system where you simply restart it and make the system reload. There are going to be other times when you need to do a “hard” reboot where you completely shut the system down where it is off and completely restart it.

Ephesians 5:15-16 | AMPC (15) Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), (16) Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.

Redeem: to buy up, i.e. ransom; figuratively, to rescue from loss (improve opportunity):

Martha (Luke 10) was doing a good thing, but she was doing it at the wrong time.

    1. Resource Management

If you don’t manage the material resources of your life well, it will cause your life to become complicated.

    1. Relationship Management

Strife and contention will always cause your life to become complicated and stressful.

We can also see that the complications of our lives will show up in these three areas of our lives.

Proverbs 10:23 | NKJV To do evil is like sport to a fool, But a man of understanding has wisdom.

Proverbs 14:33 | NKJV Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, But what is in the heart of fools is made known.

Proverbs 17:24 | NKJV Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

    Proverbs 24:30-34 | NKJV
    (30) I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; (31) And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down.

    Even God works this way.

Hebrews 11:3 | AMPC By faith we understand that the worlds [during the successive ages] were framed (fashioned, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose) by the word of God, so that what we see was not made out of things which are visible.

We must learn not to confuse “neat and tidy” with organized. They can be two different things.

Being organized has less to do with the way an environment “looks” than how effectively it “functions”.
